Benji the Hunted 1987

In the rugged landscapes of Oregon, a palpable sense of desperation permeates the air as the news of Benji’s disappearance during a film shoot spreads. His trainer, Frank Inn, paints a bleak scenario for a reporter, revealing that while out on a fishing boat in the Pacific, a furious storm struck, overturning their vessel. As the search efforts dwindle, Inn fears the worst, yet the film producers refuse to back down, using all available resources to locate Benji.

The following day, Benji is found lying motionless by the shore while a helicopter hovers above, oblivious to his plight. Wandering through the woods, he encounters a female cougar on the verge of death, suffering from a gunshot wound inflicted by a lurking hunter. With a heavy heart, Benji tries to console the dying creature, only to be driven away by the hunter, who takes the lifeless feline away as a trophy. Once again, the helicopter flies overhead while Benji desperately attempts to call for help, his barks falling on deaf ears.

Unfazed by the odds, Benji stumbles upon four orphaned cubs left to fend for themselves in this suddenly harsh reality. Driven by an innate sense of compassion, he chooses to care for them, shielding them from the cruelty of their environment. As he searches for food, he comes face to face with a rabbit but, instead of hunting it, he lets it slip away—a testament to his kindness and survival instinct. His quest for sustenance leads him to a cabin where a quail roasts over a fire, flanked by the grim sight of two other dead birds. Seizing the moment, Benji grabs one of the quails and makes a hasty retreat, determined to provide nourishment for his newfound family.

The next day brings an unexpected twist as Benji returns to the cabin, hoping to secure the remaining quail. Instead, he finds himself captured by the hunter, who has not forgotten the reward promised for anyone who rescues the missing dog. Seizing a fleeting moment, Benji manages to wriggle free just as a black wolf materializes from the shadows, its eyes locked onto him. When the hunter reappears, the wolf retreats, only to return with ferocity. In a panic, Benji creates a scene, successfully scaring off the predator.

As the hunter loosens Benji’s restraints, he seizes the chance to reclaim the remaining quail and dashes back to reunite with the cubs. However, their sense of security is disrupted when an adult female cougar appears, her menacing gaze fixed on Benji. With extraordinary agility, he swiftly ushers the cubs to safety, relocating them to a more secure hiding spot away from danger.

Tending to his young charges, Benji sees the helicopter again, and his trainer is now visible through the window. But as he finishes his responsibilities, another predator lays claim to the quail, forcing him to seek out new sources of food to keep the cubs alive. Meanwhile, the lurking wolf edges closer to their haven, but the approach of the helicopter frightens it away, letting Benji exhale a relieved sigh as he continues his relentless journey to protect those he has taken under his care.

The peaceful routine is abruptly shattered when the majestic cougar reappears, closely followed by the cunning wolf. The wolf’s relentless pursuit sends Benji scrambling for concealment, but his quick instincts help him avoid being caught. Soon, the four curious cubs decide to trail Benji as he navigates their shared territory. Suddenly, they come face-to-face with a massive grizzly bear, causing Benji and the cubs to scatter for safety. One of the more daring cubs, driven by curiosity, attempts to confront the gargantuan predator but is quickly chased back towards the group’s hiding place.

Benji instinctively redirects the bear’s attention, barking loudly to lure it away from the vulnerable cubs. Just as the wolf reemerges, eager to resume its pursuit of Benji, he cleverly attracts it towards the waiting grizzly. The bear’s furious roar sends the wolf retreating in fear.

In a different part of the forest, a female cougar and her cub navigate a river when the helicopter whirs overhead, causing them to flee in fright. Benji, spotting the cougar again, takes the initiative and barks commandingly to the cubs, urging them to traverse the dangerous stream behind him. Unbeknownst to Frank Inn, who has just exited his helicopter, Benji prioritizes the safety of the cubs over his own reunion.

But fate has cruel plans; an eagle swoops down and snatches one of the cubs, soaring away with its prize. When the eagle circles back for a second attempt, Benji springs into action, fiercely chasing the bird away with unwavering determination.

In his next move, Benji seeks the female cougar, persistently barking until she takes interest. Although he loses track of her, his relentless spirit ultimately guides him to her hiding place near the waterfall. With the cubs trailing him, he notices the wolf again, lurking nearby, and he bravely confronts it to distract its gaze. As the wolf gives chase, Benji cleverly hides in a thicket of bushes, watching as the predator tumbles off a steep ledge.

Exhausted but triumphant, Benji calls to the cubs, coaxing them from their concealment to join him atop the mountain. With all four cubs safely at his side, the female cougar arrives, seemingly adopting them as her own. Benji basks in this moment of peacefulness, but soon the helicopter returns, its ominous rotors whirring in the distance as the adventures continue.
