Plot Summary

As Min’s mysterious and agonizing rash spreads across his torso like a living entity, he finds himself trapped in a desperate bid for medical attention. His girlfriend Roong and an enigmatic middle-aged woman named Orn take him to see a doctor, but Min’s linguistic limitations force him into a precarious silence. Conceding the truth about his immigration status would be a recipe for disaster, so Min remains mute, his eyes beseeching the doctor to treat his suffering without asking the wrong questions.

The physician’s diagnosis is accompanied by a stern warning: without proper identification documents, Min will not receive the necessary medical papers to secure a work permit. Roong’s financial resources are mobilized to find an alternative solution, and Orn becomes the unlikely catalyst for their plan. Her own struggles with stress-relieving medication lead her to confide in Min about its alleged anti-depressant properties - a claim that raises more questions than answers.

As Min’s condition continues to worsen, Orn takes matters into her own hands, concocting a homemade remedy from chopped vegetables and store-bought creams. Her husband’s disinterest in having another child is met with a mixture of disappointment and resentment, which she seeks to assuage through the application of her makeshift ointment. Meanwhile, Min finds himself vulnerable to the advances of a mysterious stranger who takes an unsettling interest in him.

In a desperate bid for respite from his physical torment, Roong feigns illness and absconds with Min to a secluded location. As they escape into the countryside, Roong’s disdain for Orn is palpable - she sees the older woman as a fake, a pretender who has usurped her rightful place in society. The scenic beauty of their cliffside picnic serves only to underscore the fragility of their circumstances and the tenuous nature of their relationships.

As Orn’s illicit encounter with one of her husband’s colleagues reaches its climax, the sudden theft of his motorcycle sends him fleeing into the night, leaving her to wallow in anxious solitude. The silence is oppressive, punctuated only by the sound of her own ragged breathing. Eventually, she finds herself lost and alone in the woods, until the serendipity of fate leads her to stumble upon a young couple, Roong and Min, indulging in a tender moment by the riverbank.

Roong’s gentle ministrations on Min’s person are interrupted only by Orn’s hesitant approach. Initially, she seems out of place among the trio, but Roong’s warm invitation into the stream soon puts her at ease. As they anoint their bodies with lotion and dry off in the warm sun, a sense of camaraderie develops among them. Later, as they recline on the riverbank, Orn can’t help but feel a pang of sadness as she gazes upon the blissful couple. Her melancholy is momentarily assuaged by the discovery of ants crawling across their picnic debris, which she subsequently dispatches into the river with a mixture of frustration and despair.

As her emotions begin to overwhelm her, Orn resorts to stealing a cigarette and succumbing to tears. Meanwhile, Roong’s own emotions are focused on Min, whose name she whispers sweet nothings as she playfully manipulates his penis. The camera captures Roong’s tender moment, before panning upwards to reveal her gazing directly at the audience.

The film concludes with a stark reminder of the passage of time: December 2001. Min is stationed in Bangkok, waiting for work at a casino on the Thai-Cambodian border. Roong has since reunited with her former lover and now runs a noodle stand in a town not far from the bustling metropolis. Orn, meanwhile, remains an extra in Thailand’s thriving film industry, a constant presence on the periphery of the cinematic world.
