In the midst of a precarious existence outside New Orleans, Antonio LeBlanc's life is a delicate balancing act as a tattoo artist, husband to rehabilitation nurse Kathy, and father-to-be. His criminal record has effectively shut down any opportunities for gainful employment, forcing Kathy to consider re-entering the workforce to support their family. However, this fragile equilibrium is disrupted when Antonio is brutally arrested by NOPD officers Ace (Jessie's biological father) and Denny, a development that sends his world spiraling out of control. As the reality of his situation sets in, Antonio finds himself facing deportation due to his adoptive parents' failure to naturalize him under the Child Citizenship Act of 2000. With his future hanging precariously in the balance, Antonio and Kathy turn to immigration lawyer Barry Boucher (who demands a $5,000 retainer) for help in appealing their situation.

As Antonio navigates this treacherous landscape, he forms an unlikely bond with Parker, a Vietnamese refugee struggling with terminal cancer. Her invitation to share a communal cookout at her home becomes a poignant reminder of the importance of community and connection. Meanwhile, Antonio's criminal past continues to haunt him as he resorts to illegal means to make ends meet, including stealing motorcycles and selling them. This reckless behavior nearly lands him in hot water once more, prompting Antonio to pay Barry's retainer by claiming it was an advance from a new job opportunity – a claim that only adds to the suspicions surrounding his situation.

The cracks in their relationship begin to show as Kathy becomes increasingly uneasy about Antonio's secretive nature and his refusal to engage with his adoptive mother, who remains alive. This lack of transparency is further compounded when Antonio refuses to reach out to her for support, citing past traumas stemming from his abusive childhood. The emotional toll of this secrecy finally becomes too much for Kathy to bear, and she makes the difficult decision to leave Antonio, taking their unborn child with her as they move in with her mother. As Antonio's world begins to unravel, he finds himself losing hope and severing ties with Parker, leaving him alone to face an uncertain future.

As Antonio's journey nears its conclusion, he makes a poignant pilgrimage to his widowed mother, only to find her emotionally numb and seemingly uninterested in his impending trial. The weight of his financial struggles becomes too much to bear, as he is summarily fired from the tattoo parlor due to unpaid debts. Meanwhile, his bond with Parker continues to strengthen, despite the relentless march of cancer's cruel progression. When she succumbs to unconsciousness, Antonio springs into action, rushing her to the hospital where medical professionals work tirelessly to stabilize her condition.

The birth of Kathy and Antonio's daughter serves as a fleeting respite from the turmoil, allowing them to rekindle their connection and find solace in each other's company. As the day of his hearing draws near, a coalition of loved ones, including Kathy, Jessie, Antonio's mother, and his closest friends - including Ace - converges to offer their unwavering support.

However, unbeknownst to this coterie of concerned citizens, Antonio is brutally ambushed by Denny and his cohorts, who leave him for dead in a desperate bid to ensure he misses his hearing. As the reality of his deportation dawns on him, Antonio's desperation reaches a fever pitch, prompting a futile attempt at self-destruction that ultimately proves too great an emotional hurdle.

Denny takes great pleasure in gloating about his handiwork to Ace, but the latter is appalled by the violence and promptly arrests the perpetrator. With his final goodbyes said to his friends, Antonio is escorted by ICE authorities to the airport, where he is bound for South Korea. Despite her deep affection for him, Kathy and Jessie manage to locate Antonio at the airport, determined to bid him farewell.

Ace also arrives, seeking a poignant moment with Jessie before she departs. Torn between his duty as a father and the cruel reality of his impending deportation, Antonio makes the heart-wrenching decision to spare his family the anguish of displacement, urging them to remain in America. As he is forcibly separated from an inconsolable Jessie, her anguished cries for him echo through the airport, leaving a lasting impression on all who bear witness.

In a powerful testament to the human cost of deportation, real-life stories of non-naturalized adoptees face similar circumstances are interwoven with estimates from the Adoptee Rights Campaign of International Adoptees, serving as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences that can unfold when the threads of love and identity are cruelly torn asunder.
