Plot Summary

In the sweltering streets of 1969 Bombay, Balraj (Balraj) - a pugilist with a penchant for street fighting and boxing - is hopelessly enamored with Rosie, a sultry jazz singer. Her frequent appearances on the arm of wealthy suitors only fuels his ambition to rise above his humble circumstances, convinced that financial success would be the key to winning her heart. Balraj’s friend Chimman becomes embroiled in his plans for upward mobility when they catch the attention of Kaizad Khambatta (Khambatta), a suave and cunning businessman who is impressed by Balraj’s tenacity and offers him the chance to manage his nightclub, Bombay Velvet - a front for his illicit activities. Khambatta dubs Balraj “Johnny,” a moniker that becomes synonymous with his new persona.

As Johnny and Chimman take on minor tasks for Khambatta, including capturing compromising evidence of a corrupt minister, they unwittingly attract the attention of Jimmy Mistri (Mistri), a ruthless journalist who has been following Rosie’s movements. Recognizing Balraj’s infatuation with Rosie, Mistri seizes the opportunity to manipulate him, dispatching her to Johnny’s club in search of the incriminating photograph. Unbeknownst to Balraj, Rosie and he gradually develop feelings for each other, but their budding romance is short-lived as Mistri threatens to expose her true identity.

Rosie begins feeding information about Johnny and Khambatta’s illegal dealings to Mistri, unaware that this will ultimately seal her fate. The consequences of her actions become apparent when a compromising photograph of Bombay’s elite is leaked, leading Khambatta to suspect Rosie of being the source. In a desperate bid to silence her, he orders her assassination. Balraj learns of these developments and forms an unshakeable vendetta against Khambatta, the man who introduced him to the seedy underbelly of Bombay.

In a calculated move, Balraj fakes Rosie’s death, having her pose as Rita, his long-lost twin sister. However, Khambatta is not fooled and kidnaps Rosie, setting the stage for a tense showdown at Bombay Velvet. In a desperate attempt to provoke Balraj into action, Khambatta shoots Rosie, prompting Balraj to stab him in a fit of rage. As Balraj attempts to carry Rosie to safety outside the club, he is met with a hail of bullets, ultimately succumbing to his wounds. The final twist reveals that Rosie miraculously survived her gunshot wound.
