What medical condition drives Dr. Leech's desperate search for a cure?

Plot Summary

As millionaire Charles Deaver (Richard Fitzpatrick), whose physical appearance has been severely marred by a catastrophic automobile accident, teeters on the brink of mortality, he makes a desperate bid to prolong his life by investing in the groundbreaking work of Dr. Nathaniel Leech (James Binkley). Leech, driven by a sense of urgency as his wife Miranda (not present) languishes with terminal leukemia, has been diligently working on a revolutionary serum capable of regenerating dead cells. When he presents this breakthrough to Deaver, he cautions that the treatment will trigger an insatiable hunger in the patient, which must be addressed by administering a specialized protein formula to avoid any adverse consequences. Deaver’s henchmen, including his top lieutenant Krendal (Wendy Anderson), brutally assault Leech before Krendal shoots him multiple times and injects him with the serum, locking him in an abandoned tunnel system overnight to test its efficacy.

As Krendal neglects to provide Leech with the necessary protein supplement, his hunger grows exponentially, leading him to consume a rat and subsequently a dog. This aberrant behavior triggers a metamorphosis, transforming Leech into a hybrid creature of monstrous proportions.

Meanwhile, a group of salvage workers, led by Vince Stoker (Tom Sizemore), infiltrate an abandoned hospital on the same property, seeking to plunder discarded equipment for quick financial gain. Stoker’s niece, Sam (Amber Cull), accompanies them on this venture. As they navigate the decaying structure, they stumble upon the tunnel system and unwittingly trigger Leech’s transformation into a gargantuan, rat-like monster. The creature begins stalking its prey, culminating in the gruesome murder of Callum (Joe Dinicol) before Sam, who frantically warns Vince and Otis (Martin Roach).

Simultaneously, Deaver dispatches Krendal and Wilkes (Simon Northwood) to retrieve Leech, unaware that they have become embroiled in a web of deceit. This duplicitous duo seals off all but one exit from the tunnel system, trapping Stoker’s team inside. Their path converges with Leech’s as they encounter the monster, who promptly dispatches Wilkes.

Krendal initially clashes with Stoker’s group before they join forces to flee from Leech’s relentless pursuit. In a moment of candor, Krendal reveals her true allegiance: she is a double agent working on behalf of the U.S. government to acquire Leech’s serum for the creation of supersoldiers.

Meanwhile, Leech exacts his revenge upon Deaver by decapitating him in his limousine, bringing an end to the millionaire’s life as he knew it.

As a desperate measure to contain the monstrous Leech, Vince and Krendal orchestrate a daring heist, luring their formidable foe back into the labyrinthine tunnels. Meanwhile, Otis and Sam embark on a perilous mission to retrieve crucial construction equipment, readying themselves for an apocalyptic showdown with the beast. Tragedy strikes when Krendal sustains a gruesome injury while setting explosives, sacrificing her own well-being so Vince can execute the remainder of their plan. Though they ultimately vanquish Leech by dismembering him with their power tools, their narrow escape is short-lived as the timers on the explosives expire, claiming Otis’s life in the process and leaving Vince and Sam to barely survive the cataclysmic aftermath.

In the aftermath of this harrowing ordeal, Vince finds himself awakened in a military hospital, his physical and emotional scars still fresh. A week has passed since their confrontation with Leech, but the true extent of their predicament only begins to reveal itself as they learn that they have been contaminated by the monster’s toxic serum through his very blood. As the doctor departs the room, leaving Vince connected to an intravenous drip of the protein formula, the protagonist’s body begins to writhe in agony as the serum’s insidious effects take hold, his overwhelming hunger becoming a relentless and merciless force that threatens to consume him whole.
