What year is the setting of 'Brooklyn Rules'?
In the sweltering summer of 1985, Michael, the smooth-talking narrator, effortlessly manipulates his way into Columbia University’s pre-law program, his charming facade masking a con artist’s instincts. In stark contrast, his confidant Carmine, a dashing ladies’ man with a penchant for the high-stakes world of organized crime, is fixated on maintaining his ties to the Brooklyn streets and its Mafia undercurrents. Meanwhile, Bobby, the lovable cheapskate, longs for a life of simplicity, contentment, and domesticity alongside his fiancée. As these three unlikely roommates navigate the hallowed halls of Columbia, Michael becomes smitten with Ellen (Mena Suvari), a stunning co-ed from a privileged background, whom he initially wins over with his preppy, All-American charm. As their relationship flourishes, the allure of a life beyond the streets grows stronger, but when Carmine catches the eye of Caesar (Alec Baldwin), a ruthless Gambino family capo who rules their neighborhood with an iron fist, Michael and Bobby are reluctantly drawn into the treacherous underbelly of the city’s criminal underworld.
