Carlos Nuñez (17), a studious Mexican-American teenager from East Los Angeles, embarks on a daily four-hour bus ride to attend school in the affluent Pacific Palisades, driven by his ambition to attend the prestigious U.S. Naval Academy and become a pilot. On a carefree day at the Santa Monica Pier with friends, he meets Nicole Oakley, a classmate who's serving out a DUI sentence by cleaning up trash on the beach. A rebellious and hard-partying daughter of a US congressman, Nicole hails from the upscale Palisades but has a strained relationship with her father due to feelings of neglect stemming from her mother's tragic passing when she was young.

Despite their vastly different backgrounds, Carlos and Nicole begin an unlikely romance, with their contrasting lifestyles posing significant hurdles. When Carlos invites Nicole to a family gathering, she feels out of place as the sole non-Hispanic attendee, prompting her to pull a stunt that lands Carlos in detention. As tensions rise, he confronts her about not appreciating the privileges she enjoys, leading to a heated exchange.

Despite these challenges, their relationship blossoms, with Nicole attempting to steer Carlos away from his more reserved nature and Carlos trying to guide Nicole towards healthier habits. A turning point comes when Nicole arranges a flying lesson for Carlos, who's long dreamed of becoming a pilot but has never had the opportunity.
