What tragic event occurs shortly after Sarah receives Chucky?

Plot Summary

As Sarah Pierce’s mysterious existence is forever shattered, a cryptic package bearing an uncanny resemblance to the notorious doll, Chucky, arrives at her doorstep. Initially perplexed, Sarah hastily discards the seemingly harmless toy, only for tragedy to strike when she meets an untimely demise that night - the investigation would later reveal a self-inflicted wound inflicted by a pair of scissors.

In the aftermath, Nica Pierce, Sarah’s paraplegic daughter, is visited by her older sister Barb, who brings along her husband Ian, their daughter Alice, and live-in nanny Jill. However, beneath the surface of this seemingly ordinary family gathering, tensions simmer as Nica and Barb clash over the fate of their beloved home, with the latter urging the former to consider assisted living.

Meanwhile, a peculiar bond forms between Chucky and Alice, who discovers the doll in an old trunk. Unbeknownst to the family, Chucky has sinister intentions, which become apparent when he secretly poisons Father Frank, a guest at the Pierce residence. As the priest’s condition rapidly deteriorates, he departs the house only to meet a gruesome end in a car accident, leaving behind a trail of mystery for local police officer Stratton to unravel.

As the family gathers to reminisce through old home movies, Nica notices an eerie presence lurking in the shadows of their past. When Alice loses track of Chucky, Nica finds the doll and returns it to its rightful owner, unaware that Chucky has been secretly communicating with Alice. Concerned by her daughter’s growing affinity for the doll, Nica delves into Chucky’s dark history, uncovering disturbing news reports and a photograph of Charles Lee Ray, Chucky’s human form, which eerily resonates with an image from their own family archives.

As the body count begins to rise, Chucky orchestrates a series of gruesome events, including the fatal electrocution of Jill during a video conference with Barb. In response, Barb leaves to investigate, only to be confronted by Ian, who reveals his discovery of her illicit affair and has been secretly monitoring their interactions through hidden cameras.

Nica attempts to warn Barb about Chucky’s true nature, but she accuses Nica of conspiring with Ian. As tensions escalate, Barb ventures upstairs to the attic, where she stumbles upon a shocking revelation - Chucky’s face is a facade, concealing stitches and wounds beneath a layer of plastic. As the doll comes to life, it delivers a brutal blow to Barb, striking her in the eye.

As Nica watches in horror, Barb’s lifeless form crashes to the ground at her feet. Chucky, like a malevolent force unleashed, gives chase, sending Nica fleeing for her life. In a desperate bid to escape, she awakens Ian from his slumber, only for him to mistakenly assume she’s the killer and turn on her with suspicion. Nica’s world crumbles as she suffers a heart attack and succumbs to unconsciousness. When she comes to, she finds herself bound and helpless in the very house where her nightmare began.

Ian, now oblivious to the true horror unfolding before his eyes, pores over Chucky’s nanny cam footage on his laptop, utterly unaware of the evil that lurks mere feet away. Chucky seizes the opportunity, striking down Ian with a gruesome brutality that leaves him lifeless. Nica manages to break free from her restraints and engages in a desperate struggle against her monstrous foe. Though she’s tossed from the balcony like a rag doll, Nica refuses to back down.

As she confronts Chucky about his heinous crimes against her family, he reveals a twisted history of obsession and betrayal. In 1988, he brutally murdered Nica’s father and kidnapped Sarah, only to be thwarted by the police. Believing Sarah had led them to him, Charles - as he was then known - viciously stabbed the pregnant woman in the stomach, condemning Nica to a life of paralysis. And yet, even in death, his malevolent spirit continued to wreak havoc.

Nica attempts to stall Chucky’s rampage with biting sarcasm, but ultimately manages to wrestle his knife away and plunge it deep into his chest. It seems she has finally vanquished the monster that had haunted her for so long. However, Chucky’s unnatural resilience allows him to reanimate, and he settles in a nearby chair like a vengeful specter.

As Stratton arrives on the scene, Nica is arrested, wrongly accused of the murders, and subsequently institutionalized. Later, Stratton delivers Chucky to an unknown buyer, only to meet a grisly end at the hands of Tiffany Valentine. Her final act before disappearing is to send Chucky hurtling towards Alice, who - unsuspecting - invites him into her life.

In a chilling sequence, Chucky sets about enacting a dark and ancient voodoo ritual, his ultimate goal being to transfer his cursed soul into Alice’s vulnerable body. The stage is set for a new wave of terror as this monstrous entity begins its sinister ascent.

In a post-credits epilogue, Chucky finds himself bound for Andy Barclay, now an adult. However, Andy - ever the resourceful and feisty protagonist - manages to get the drop on him, unleashing a hail of shotgun blasts that finally lay Chucky’s malevolent spirit to rest.
