Dark Blue World Quiz: Test your knowledge on the poignant and heroic story of Czechoslovakian pilots during World War II.

In which year does the main character František Sláma find himself imprisoned?

Plot Summary

In 1950, Czechoslovakian national František (Franta) Sláma, a seasoned veteran of the RAF, finds himself imprisoned in his homeland, the direct result of his wartime service. As he sits in solitary confinement, Franta’s memories transport him back to the tumultuous days preceding the German invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1939. With the Czechoslovak Army disbanded and its Air Force forced to surrender its aircraft, a group of determined pilots, including the spirited young Karel Vojtíšek, refuse to submit to their occupiers and flee to the United Kingdom to join the RAF.

The British, however, prove reluctant to accommodate these new recruits, forcing them to relearn the basics from scratch. This ignominy is particularly galling for Karel, who is both eager to take to the skies and humiliated by being taught what he already knows. The mandatory English language lessons only add insult to injury, as Karel views them as a pointless waste of his time. Yet, despite these challenges, the RAF’s dire need of pilots during the Battle of Britain ultimately prompts the Czechoslovak airmen to be allowed to fly. After their first mission, they come to understand the intensity of British training: a young pilot, nicknamed “Tom Tom,” is shot down and killed in action.

As Franta assumes command of his unit, with Karel serving under him, the latter’s skills as a pilot continue to evolve. During a dogfight, Karel’s Spitfire fighter is struck, forcing him to make an emergency landing on a farm. There, he meets Susan, a lovely young woman who, despite her initial reservations about Karel’s youth, soon finds herself falling for him. The following day, Karel introduces Franta to Susan, sparking a sense of attraction in the older pilot.

Their camaraderie is put to the test during a mission to France, where their squadron targets a train. When Karel is shot down, it is Franta who arrives just in time to rescue his friend, a testament to the enduring bonds of friendship forged in battle. However, this heroic act sets off a chain reaction of events that ultimately reveals a complex web of emotions, as Susan finds herself drawn to both Franta and Karel, leading to a heated quarrel between the two friends.

In the war’s later stages, while escorting American bombers, Franta’s Spitfire malfunctions, forcing him to make an emergency landing in the ocean. His life raft bursts, leaving him struggling to inflate it. In a heroic act of devotion, Karel attempts to drop his own raft to save his friend, but his plane crashes fatally as he flies too low. The raft ultimately emerges from the water, allowing Franta to survive against all odds.

As the tumultuous war finally subsides, Franta embarks on a poignant journey to Susan’s residence, only to be met with an unexpected turn of events: she is now tending to her wounded husband, recently returned from the battle-scarred front lines. Confronted with the harsh reality that his own romantic prospects are all but extinguished, Franta musters the courage to pretend he’s lost his way and solicit directions to the next town, thereby preserving Susan’s dignity and honor. With a heavy heart, Franta departs, leaving behind the lingering hope of what could have been.

Upon returning to Czechoslovakia, Franta is struck by the profound changes that have taken place in his absence. His former flame has not only married the neighborhood busybody but has also given birth to a child and assumed control over Barča, his beloved canine companion. As he struggles to come to terms with this unexpected turn of events, all Franta can muster is a stoic resignation to his circumstances.

In the confines of prison, where the harsh realities of his situation are amplified by the isolation and monotony, Franta finds solace only in the cherished memories of his friendship with Karel. The recollections serve as a beacon of comfort, illuminating the dark recesses of his cell and reminding him that even in the depths of despair, there is always something to be cherished.
