Who plays the role of Princess Diana in the film?

Plot Summary

As the tumultuous marriage of Princess Diana (Naomi Watts) and Charles, Prince of Wales, disintegrates, the royal’s attention turns to Dr. Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews), a Pakistani heart surgeon who treats her as an ordinary person, rather than a member of the British aristocracy. The Princess’s globetrotting escapades take her to Angola, Australia, Pakistan, New York, Bosnia, Italy, Paris, and France, where she is constantly hounded by the paparazzi, fueling speculation about her impending divorce.

The formal separation from Charles in 1992 marks the beginning of a long period of emotional isolation for Diana. As the years pass, her relationship with her sons, Harry (Harry Holland) and William (Laurence Belcher), becomes increasingly strained, with visits limited to just once every five weeks. It is during this tumultuous period that she meets Dr. Hasnat through a mutual friend’s husband, who is hospitalized after a heart attack. The doctor’s kind treatment of her as an ordinary person, rather than a princess, resonates deeply with Diana.

As their friendship blossoms into a close relationship, Diana finds solace in the fact that Hasnat is not intimidated by her royal status. She begins to invite him to visit her at the palace, and their bond grows stronger. However, the constant media scrutiny surrounding her divorce from Charles proves a significant obstacle for their budding romance.

In a shocking turn of events, a BBC interview aired on November 20, 1995, in which Diana directly accuses Charles of infidelity with Camilla Parker Bowles. The fallout from this candid revelation is severe, and she finds herself further isolated from her social circle. Her private secretary, Patrick Jephson (Charles Edwards), ultimately resigns in protest.

This period of intense isolation drives Diana closer to Hasnat, and the two share a romantic night together. A year later, Diana embarks on an anti-land mine mission in Angola, where she faces opposition from the palace as it seeks to suppress the publicity surrounding her efforts.

Undeterred by these challenges, Diana uses her celebrity status to draw attention to the cause, walking across land-mine cleared fields to bring awareness to the issue and gather support to stop land-mine production. Her divorce from Charles is finally finalized, marking a new chapter in her life.

However, Hasnat’s patience eventually wears thin as Diana tries to protect him by denying rumors of their affair, which ultimately backfires and makes him the subject of ridicule at his workplace. Heartbroken and humiliated, Hasnat ends their relationship, leaving Diana to pick up the pieces of her shattered reputation.

As the tumultuous relationship between Diana (character) and Hasnat reaches a boiling point, she embarks on a solo journey to Pakistan to mend fences with his family. Hasnat’s mother, a vocal critic of British involvement in the partition, initially rejects Diana, but eventually warms up to her charms. This brief respite from the drama is short-lived, as Diana’s humanitarian endeavors take center stage. She travels to Italy, where she confides in Prof Christian Barnard about her deep-seated love for Hasnat and her desire to marry him. With his guidance, she sets out to secure a job for Hasnat outside of England, hoping to build a life free from the prying eyes of the paparazzi.

As Diana’s philanthropic pursuits continue to take her around the world, she auctions off her gowns in New York to raise funds for AIDS research. However, her efforts are soon overshadowed by a personal crisis when Hasnat discovers that she has used her influence to secure him a position in Boston. The couple’s relationship falters once more, only to be rekindled briefly before ultimately succumbing to the pressures of fame and family expectations. Hasnat’s uncle advises him that his mother disapproves of Diana due to her previous marriage and faith, while also fearing that their union would bring unwanted attention to his medical career.

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Hasnat makes the difficult decision to prioritize his profession over his love for Diana, leaving them separated for the final time. As Diana navigates the media frenzy surrounding their separation, she receives an invitation from Dodi Fayed (Cas Anvar) to join him on his private yacht. This marks the beginning of a new chapter in her life, as she makes a conscious effort to keep her relationship with Dodi publicly transparent.

Despite the chaos that surrounds her personal life, Diana remains committed to promoting the cause of anti-land mine operations in Bosnia. Her relationship with Dodi attracts unprecedented paparazzi attention, following their every move and capturing intimate moments. As the pressures mount, Diana’s distress grows. In August 1997, she finds herself in Paris with Dodi, unaware that their time together is drawing to a close. Tragically, they are killed in a car crash on August 31st while being pursued by paparazzi through a tunnel, bringing an abrupt and heartbreaking end to Diana’s tumultuous life.
