What is the primary occupation of Jess Webb-Thomas?

Plot Summary

In the picturesque Welsh countryside, Jessica “Jess” Webb-Thomas, a renowned American sculptor and former addict, reconnects with her estranged daughter Chloe, the product of a troubled past marred by Jess’s drug addiction. Despite their initial strained relationship, Jess extends an olive branch to Chloe, inviting her to reside with her and second husband Ben Thomas. However, Chloe declines, opting instead for a night out with friend Danny at a mysterious abode said to be the former dwelling of a notorious witch. As they leave, Danny is beset by inexplicable occurrences that culminate in his disappearance. Confronted by the demonic spirit’s malevolent presence, Chloe reluctantly accepts Jess’s offer and joins her family.

Initially, Chloe remains resistant to her family’s efforts at reconciliation. The situation takes a bizarre turn when she discovers a human molar in her carrot and coriander soup, foreshadowing the eerie events that unfold. Jess is plagued by recurring nightmares featuring an old woman who whispers “Przepraszam” (Polish for “I’m sorry”) before taking her own life. Chloe recognizes this description from the urban legend surrounding Mary Aminov, a deceased neighbor rumored to have been a witch. According to lore, knocking twice on her door would summon Mary’s vengeful spirit.

As tensions rise within the family, Jess and Ben are oblivious to the fact that their workshop is being manipulated by an unseen force. Chloe grows increasingly uneasy, believing herself to be haunted by Baba Yaga, a malevolent Slavic witch. As relationships between Jess, Chloe, and her mother begin to thaw, the house becomes a hotbed of paranormal activity. The family’s sculpture studio is left in disarray, with the ominous message “She’s mine” scrawled across the floor.

That night, Jess and Chloe are terrorized by Mary Aminov’s malevolent spirit. In the aftermath, a portal opens, placing Chloe in grave danger. Ben saves her just in time, and the family seeks guidance from Tira, their model and confidante. However, Tira reveals that Mary was never a witch – instead, it was Chloe’s own actions that fueled the urban legend surrounding her death. Chloe becomes convinced that she is responsible for the disappearances, leading her to flee in panic and return to the foster home.

Jess sets out to rescue her daughter, but not before experiencing an epiphany that Detective Boardman is actually behind the mysterious events. In a desperate bid to save Chloe, Jess confronts the truth – only to find her daughter has been spirited away by the witch’s dark forces.

As Jess ventures into Mary’s abandoned abode, her reckless abandon is met with a harsh reality - an old nail waiting to inflict a painful wound on her foot. The uninvited intrusion comes to a sudden halt when she’s caught and carted off to the local police station. Not before, however, she leaves her mark by knocking twice at the door, a gesture that seems almost ritualistic in its significance. Later, while languishing in her prison cell, Jess is unexpectedly whisked away through the same mysterious portal that had brought her to this point. The resulting journey finds her wandering into a dimly lit cave, where she stumbles upon a cage containing Chloe, her friend and confidant.

Jess’s determination to free Chloe leads her to spring the trap, and together they embark on a desperate bid for freedom from the clutches of Baba Yaga, the malevolent force that pursues them relentlessly. Meanwhile, Boardman arrives at the witch’s lair, only to be dragged inside by the very entity he had hoped to escape. The scene shifts back to Jess’s home, where Ben returns to find a mysterious visitor lurking in his bedroom, their presence as unsettling as it is inexplicable.

Jess and Chloe arrive home to discover that Ben has vanished into thin air, leaving behind only a sense of foreboding. Their worst fears are soon confirmed when Tira, her face smeared with blood, emerges from the shadows, Ben’s lifeless body stashed away in the trunk of her car. The eerie symbol of the “Slave of Baba Yaga” emblazoned on Tira’s chest serves as a chilling reminder of the darkness that has consumed their world.

As Jess and Chloe struggle to make sense of the horror that surrounds them, they’re forced to confront the stark reality: Boardman was innocent all along, his fate sealed by Mary’s treachery. The revelation sends shockwaves through Jess, who realizes that Tira had manipulated her into sacrificing Boardman’s life to Baba Yaga in exchange for the demon’s transfer to herself.

The air is thick with tension as Jess’s world begins to unravel further. A sudden, searing sensation coursing through her necklace serves as a stark reminder of the mark of Baba Yaga now etched upon her skin. The room plunges into darkness, punctuated only by two faint knocks at the door. As it creaks open, the looming figure of Baba Yaga reaches out towards them, leaving viewers with an unforgettable sense of unease as the film comes to a haunting close.
