What city do John and Laura travel to after the death of their daughter?

Plot Summary

As the emotional wounds of their young daughter Christine’s tragic passing still lingered, John Baxter (actor name) and his deeply grieving wife Laura embarked on a journey to Venice, where John had been commissioned by a bishop to restore an ancient church. The weight of their sorrow hung heavy in the air as they navigated the winding canals and ornate piazzas of this mystical city. It was during a dinner at a quaint local eatery that Laura’s path crossed with two enigmatic elderly sisters, Heather and Wendy, who claimed to possess an otherworldly gift. Despite her physical blindness, Heather seemed to possess an uncanny ability to tap into the unknown, and her words struck a chord deep within Laura.

As the evening wore on, Laura’s emotional state began to unravel, culminating in a fainting spell that left her husband John Baxter (actor name) scrambling to find help. The hospital visit that followed only added to the tension between them, as Laura confided in John about Heather’s unsettling revelation. Though John remained skeptical, he couldn’t deny the palpable shift in his wife’s demeanor, and their subsequent evening together was marked by a newfound sense of passion and intimacy.

The following day, Laura sought out Heather and Wendy once more, this time participating in a séance aimed at contacting the spirit of Christine. The experience left her shaken but also strangely invigorated, and it wasn’t long before she shared her findings with John – including the ominous warning that he was in grave danger and must leave Venice forthwith. But John’s rational mind refused to yield to the sisters’ mystic claims, leading to a heated argument between the couple.

As the night wore on, the telephone rang, bringing news of their young son’s injury in an accident at boarding school. Laura hastily departed for England, leaving John behind to complete his restoration project. It was as if fate had conspired against him, as a near-fatal accident at the very church where he stood soon threatened to claim his life. For John, there could be no denying the “danger” that had been foretold by Heather’s prophetic words – and it seemed that Christine’s spirit still held a powerful influence over their lives.

As the day wears on, John’s trepidation grows as he mistakenly assumes Laura is safely in England, only to be jolted back to reality when he spots her aboard a passing boat in a somber procession, accompanied by her enigmatic sisters. His concern for his wife’s well-being intensifies as whispers of a serial killer stalking the canals of Venice reach his ears. John decides to report Laura’s apparent disappearance to the authorities, but not before the inspector investigating the murders becomes suspicious of him and dispatches an operative to keep tabs on his movements. As John embarks on a fruitless search for Laura and her sisters - during which he catches another fleeting glimpse of the eerie childlike figure in red - he pays a visit to his son’s school, only to uncover a shocking truth: Laura is actually present in England.

Reeling from this revelation, John hastens back to the police station to share his discovery with them. However, by the time he arrives, the authorities have already taken Heather into custody for questioning, and an apologetic John offers to escort her back to their hotel. But just as they are about to depart, Heather slips into a trance-like state, prompting John to hastily exit the scene. Upon emerging from her trance, Heather implores her sister to pursue John, sensing that disaster is imminent, but Wendy proves unable to catch up with him.

Meanwhile, John inadvertently stumbles upon another enigmatic encounter - this time, he pursues the mysterious figure in red into a deserted palazzo, convinced it’s just a child. However, as he corners the figure, his illusions are shattered when it reveals itself to be a grotesque female dwarf. With John frozen in terror, the dwarf produces a meat cleaver and deals him a fatal blow. As life slips away from him, John grasps the horrifying truth: the strange visions he experienced were, in fact, premonitions of his own murder and subsequent funeral procession.
