As the swirling 1960s gave way to the dawn of a new decade, three talented souls from Detroit - Effie White, Deena Jones, and Lorrell Robinson - converged to form an R&B trio called The Dreamettes. Their harmonious voices soared through local talent contests, drawing the attention of Curtis Taylor Jr., a calculating and cunning talent manager with a keen eye for opportunity. Seizing the moment, he offered them a spot as backup singers for the enigmatic James ‘Thunder’ Early, a charismatic performer whose electrifying stage presence left audiences entranced.

The Dreamettes took their chance, and soon found themselves on the Apollo Theatre’s hallowed stage in New York City, their debut performance a resounding success. Effie’s brother, C.C. White, a gifted songwriter with a knack for crafting hits, began to pen tunes for Early and The Dreamettes. Curtis, however, had grander plans - he would rebrand them as The Dreams, a pop phenomenon designed to captivate the masses. Deena Jones, radiant and poised, would take center stage, while Effie White’s powerful voice would be relegated to backup duties.
