What is Tina's relationship to Karen?

Plot Summary

As conceptual artist Tina (Alysia Reiner) navigates her eight-months-pregnant state, she finds herself pitted against her art school rival Karen (Christina Hendricks) in a battle of wits and ideology. The tension between the two women reaches a boiling point when Tina introduces Karen to Kiki (Anna Camp), her unconventional surrogate. This unexpected twist sets off a chain reaction of confrontations that challenge the traditional roles of mothers in patriarchal society.

Tina’s desire to appear accomplished and alluring in front of Karen is palpable, as she invites the rival couple over to her industrial-chic apartment. However, the evening quickly takes a turn as Tina and Don (David Alan Basche) discover common ground, while Wayne (Gbenga Akinnagbe) and Kiki find themselves at odds with each other’s unconventional approaches to pregnancy preparation.

As the conversation turns to motherhood, Karen reveals her patronizing attitude towards women without children, prompting Tina to announce her own pregnancy. The introduction of Kiki serves as a catalyst for Tina’s provocative declaration of war on traditional maternal roles. Her assertion that some women become mothers for reasons of ego or vanity sparks a heated exchange with Karen, who is horrified by Tina’s “economic” approach to motherhood.

As the tension between the two women escalates, it becomes clear that Kiki is more than just a casual acquaintance to Wayne. Kiki reaches out to Wayne and shares her concerns about her husband Clarke’s (her married boyfriend with five children) distressing reaction upon learning of her surrogacy. This revelation prompts Don and Wayne to take action.

Meanwhile, Tina continues to make derogatory remarks about women who become pregnant naturally, prompting Karen to issue a stern warning against attacking her. In turn, Karen reveals that she is struggling in her own marriage, as her husband refuses to engage in intimate activities with her. Tina misinterprets this information, perceiving Wayne’s interest in natural childbirth as a “pregnancy crush” on Karen.

As the two couples navigate their complicated relationships and conflicting values, it becomes clear that the true battleground lies not between the women themselves, but rather within the patriarchal structures that seek to maintain control over motherhood.

As Karen’s suspicions about Don’s infidelity continue to simmer, a new force enters the scene in the form of Kiki (supermodel svelte), who arrives on the arm of Don and Wayne. The air is thick with tension as Don’s obvious admiration for Kiki’s curves only serves to further enrage Karen. Meanwhile, Kiki regales the group with tales of her complicated relationship with Clarke, claiming that his wife’s multiple pregnancies have been a clever ruse to keep him from leaving. This diatribe strikes a chord with Karen, who fears Don may soon abandon her for someone younger and more alluring. The seeds of mistrust are sown as Kiki reveals she’s considering terminating the pregnancy, not out of moral conviction, but to rekindle things with Clarke.

As the conversation turns increasingly toxic, Tina finds herself growing increasingly discomfited by Kiki’s self-serving monologue. Wayne, sensing his girlfriend’s distress, leaps to her defense, accusing Tina of being overly controlling and manipulative. Don, never one to shy away from a confrontation, calls out Tina for playing games. The atmosphere is charged with hostility as the group dynamic begins to unravel.

In an unexpected twist, Don, leveraging his connections in the property development world, offers Wayne a sweetheart deal on a luxurious rental apartment in a prime neighborhood. As Wayne’s eyes light up at the prospect of a new home, Kiki sees an opportunity to start anew, and begins to consider moving in with him. Tina, sensing her relationship with Wayne is on shaky ground, makes a desperate plea to Kiki: have an abortion, and everything can go back to normal.

But Kiki is resolute, now that she knows Wayne is willing to support her. The tension between Tina and Kiki reaches a boiling point as the latter refuses to comply with Tina’s demands. Wayne, having reached his breaking point, delivers a scathing indictment of Tina’s choices, claiming he can no longer condone them. With a heavy heart, he announces their breakup, choosing instead to be with Kiki and their child.

The aftermath is marked by Tina’s isolation and loneliness, as she launches her art collection without Wayne by her side. One year later, Wayne returns, this time accompanied by his daughter, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life.
