In the world, approximately four babies are born every second, with 98.3% of them falling into three main categories: the parent’s favorites, rebels, and the smart-alecks. Rahul, however, embodies a fourth type—a being brimming with ambition yet tethered by the heavy burden of his parents’ expectations. Nothing he accomplished ever seemed satisfactory to his father, Sushil Kapoor (Boman Irani) or mother, Seema Kapoor (Ratna Pathak Shah). As a 25-year-old architect, Rahul’s life has been meticulously curated by his domineering parents, who envisioned him stepping into their family business and marrying the daughter of a socialite friend.
When Rahul is sent to Las Vegas for job experience, the plan goes awry after he loses his job unexpectedly. Desperate to avoid disappointing his parents, he conceals the truth and scrambles to find another position. There, he encounters DK Bulani (Ram Kapoor), a friend of Sushil, who mentors him, offering casual advice and even a dubious escort service to help him unwind, while DK’s wife, Dayna (Dana Lewis), makes advances towards Rahul.
Overwhelmed and feeling directionless, Rahul seeks help from a psychologist, where fate leads him to cross paths with another patient, Riana Braganza (Kareena Kapoor). Misunderstandings ensue, with Riana believing he is sent by an ex-boyfriend to stalk her. After some comedic incidents and the accidental exchange of files, they meet on Christmas Eve and sharing a few drinks spirals into a wild night—they end up marrying each other, only to wake up horrified the next day, determined to annul the impulsive decision.
Riana, also grappling with her own unemployment woes, is soon without a roof over her head. Rahul reluctantly provides her shelter until she resolves her housing situation. As they navigate through this odd arrangement, Riana looks forward to visiting her family for New Year’s, and the annulment process looms just around the corner. They begin to unravel each other’s pasts: while Rahul reveals his lifelong obsession with perfection stemming from parental pressure, Riana opens up about her dreams of becoming a ballet dancer, tragically crushed by childhood injuries.
Their friendship blossoms as Riana introduces a newfound sense of freedom into Rahul’s structured life. They explore their respective ambitions, with Rahul’s photography and Riana’s resilience shining through. As the end of the year approaches, Riana invites Rahul to accompany her to** Mumbai**, mixing their disparate worlds together. Rahul’s feelings for Riana deepen during the visit, especially as he is welcomed by her loving family, who contrast starkly with his own experience.
Despite moments of vulnerability and affection, Riana maintains she values their connection as simply a friendship. This revelation propels Rahul into a state of confusion and anger, culminating in a heated confrontation with his family back in Las Vegas after a dinner filled with prospective marriage talks arranged by his father. No longer able to wear a facade, Rahul confronts the reality of his existence and rushes back to Riana to clarify his feelings.
In the end, they both decide that maintaining their friendship is more meaningful than any romantic entanglement, and with renewed clarity, Rahul gets a fresh job and continues pursuing photography. The story closes on a hopeful note, suggesting that perhaps one day, he may convince Riana to revisit that wedding chapel, but for now, both are genuinely content with the progression of their bond.
