Plot Summary

As the impending doom of their home planet looms large, a trio of resourceful chimpanzees - Cornelius, Zira, and Dr. Milo (in that order) - seize the opportunity to salvage and repair the spaceship of intrepid astronaut Taylor. The shockwave generated by Earth’s cataclysmic demise sends the vessel hurtling through the fabric of time, depositing its primate passengers in the unlikeliest of places: 1973 on the sun-kissed Pacific coast of the United States.

The unexpected arrivals at the Los Angeles Zoo spark a frenzy of curiosity and fascination among the scientific community. Drs. Stephanie Branton and Lewis Dixon, two friendly scientists with a passion for discovery, take it upon themselves to observe and learn from their new simian friends. Tragedy strikes when Dr. Milo meets his untimely demise at the hands of a rogue zoo gorilla.

As news of the spaceship’s return and its inhabitants spreads like wildfire, a Presidential Commission is hastily convened to unravel the mystery surrounding Taylor’s craft and its peculiar passengers. Cornelius and Zira, though initially evasive about their connection to Taylor, reveal that they hail from a future where humanity has all but destroyed itself in a devastating war. Welcomed as honored guests by the government, the apes begin to share their harrowing tale of survival with Stephanie and Lewis.

Despite the thrill of being celebrities, the apes remain cautious, knowing that their presence on 1973 Earth is a ticking time bomb waiting to unleash chaos. They secretly confide in Stephanie and Lewis about the horrors that await humanity in the future, including the catastrophic destruction of their planet. The scientists are left reeling from this revelation, urging the apes to keep their shocking tale under wraps until they can gauge the potential reaction of their hosts.

As the apes bask in the spotlight, lavished with gifts and media attention, they capture the attention of Dr. Otto Hasslein, the President’s trusted Science Advisor. His curiosity piqued by Zira’s pregnancy, Hasslein becomes increasingly obsessed with uncovering the secrets behind the apes’ remarkable adaptability. Cornelius reveals that humanity’s self-destructive tendencies will ultimately lead to its downfall, while Zira explains that the war was sparked by the gorillas, but the chimpanzees were innocent bystanders.

Hasslein’s suspicions are further fueled when Zira inadvertently divulges her past as a human dissectionist during the initial hearing. This revelation sparks a chain reaction of events, culminating in Lewis administering a truth serum to Zira while Cornelius is temporarily detained elsewhere. As the effects of the serum wear off, Hasslein learns disturbing details about Zira’s experiments on humans, as well as her knowledge of Taylor’s true identity.

As the President reluctantly sanctions Zira’s termination and sterilization, she finds herself trapped alongside Cornelius in a precarious situation. Fearing for their lives, they anxiously await the outcome of Hasslein’s findings, which he intends to use to justify the apes’ execution. Meanwhile, an orderly’s attempt at levity sparks Cornelius’ ire, prompting him to lash out and knock the man to the ground. Unbeknownst to them, the orderly’s lifeless body is a harbinger of tragedy.

As Hasslein seizes upon the incident to bolster his case against the apes, he demands their capture, but the President orders him to bring them in alive, unwilling to condone capital punishment without due process. Branton and Dixon intervene on behalf of the apes, whisking them away to Señor Armando’s circus, where an ape named Heloise has recently given birth. Zira’s labor soon follows, and she names her newborn son Milo, a poignant tribute to their fallen friend.

Hasslein, determined to capture the apes, orders a far-reaching search of circuses and zoos, prompting Armando to insist that they depart for their own safety. Lewis arranges for the apes to lay low in the Los Angeles harbor’s shipyard, where he provides Cornelius with a pistol, aware that they will not be taken alive. The stage is set for a desperate struggle, as Hasslein tracks the apes down, mortally wounding Zira and killing her infant son.

Cornelius returns fire, taking down Hasslein before succumbing to a sniper’s bullet. As Zira crawls away from the carnage, clutching the lifeless body of her child, Lewis and Stephanie bear witness to the senseless tragedy unfolding before them. In a stunning twist, it is revealed that Zira had secretly swapped babies with Heloise, and Armando is privy to this secret. As he prepares to depart for Florida, Milo suddenly begins to speak, marking a turning point in the apes’ tumultuous journey.
