What is Rollie Tyler's profession?
At a posh Manhattan restaurant, an elegantly attired woman relishes a delightful evening with her companion, until a man with a submachine gun arrives, indiscriminately firing and claiming innocent lives. As he approaches the woman, she pleads for her life, but he shoots her without hesitation. Just then, a commanding voice bellows “CUT!!” revealing that the scene was merely a setup on a film set, and the supposedly murdered woman, Ellen Keith, rises unharmed. The mastermind behind this elaborate ruse is her boyfriend, Rollie Tyler, an ingenious visual effects artist.
In his lively SoHo workshop, Rollie, with the help of his assistant Andy, is approached by a man posing as a producer. However, the man is revealed to be an undercover agent named Lipton, who persuades Rollie to use his talents to create the illusion of a mob boss, Nick DeFranco, being murdered. DeFranco is poised to testify against the Mafia, and the Justice Department wants to stage his death to protect him before the grand jury hearing. After initial hesitation, the allure of outdoing his competition piques Rollie’s interest, prompting him to take on the project.
Soon after, Lipton and Rollie meet again, leading to a moment of tension when Rollie surprises Lipton with a gun, ready to assert control. Demonstrating his abilities with the devices he plans to use, Rollie successfully impresses Lipton. The plot thickens as Rollie begins preparing DeFranco for the deceptive act, using plaster casting to create the necessary effects and secure a convincing display of deception.
With the staged assassination unfolding without a hitch, Rollie finds himself in a perilous situation when Lipton reveals a more sinister agenda, suddenly turning on him. A chaotic car chase ensues, but Rollie narrowly escapes only to uncover a conspiracy that puts his life in jeopardy. Seeking refuge in Ellen’s apartment and grappling with unforeseen tragedy, Rollie discovers that the stakes have risen, leaving both his fate and that of those around him hanging in the balance.
As the police investigate the murder of DeFranco, tensions rise between the detectives, Leo McCarthy and Mickey, as they attempt to untangle the web of deception. The twists take Rollie on a dangerous journey, forcing him to confront those involved in the plot against him and uncover the truth behind the orchestrated chaos.
Ultimately, Rollie’s resourcefulness leads him to a climactic showdown with the figures manipulating events from the shadows. Using his skills to outsmart enemies, he confronts Mason and Lipton, culminating in a shocking outcome that turns the tables. The film concludes with Rollie evading death and taking on a new identity in a world governed by lies and betrayal, leaving audiences to ponder how far one will go to survive in such a treacherous arena.
