Plot Summary

As the curtains open on this cinematic journey, Vasudha (Vidya Balan) steps off a bus, her life a canvas waiting to be painted with the strokes of fate. Meanwhile, Hari (Rajkummar Rao), a man haunted by the specter of his wife’s passing, seeks solace in the arms of a psychiatrist, sharing tales of hallucinations that threaten to consume him whole. The funeral of his beloved wife serves as a poignant reminder of life’s fragility, and it is here that Hari pilfers her ashes, leaving behind a diary for his son Saanjh - a cryptic message that hints at the complex tapestry of emotions yet to unfold.

As the narrative seamlessly shifts to the past, we find Vasudha, a devoted single mother, awaiting the return of her husband who has been missing for five long years. Tethered to tradition and a deep-seated sense of loyalty, she remains steadfast in her resolve to await his arrival. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she crosses paths with Aarav Ruparel (Emraan Hashmi), the suave owner of a luxurious hotel chain, where she works as a talented floral arranger. A chance encounter during a mock fire drill serves as the catalyst for their budding friendship, which eventually blossoms into a job offer in Dubai - an opportunity Vasudha is initially hesitant to accept.

However, as the truth about her husband’s sinister past begins to unravel, revealing him to be Hari, a terrorist responsible for the brutal murders of five American journalists, Vasudha’s world is turned upside down. Her primary concern shifts from her own emotional well-being to ensuring a secure future for her son. With this newfound awareness, she reluctantly accepts Aarav’s job offer in Dubai.

As their relationship deepens, Aarav finds himself falling deeply in love with Vasudha, unaware of the complexities that swirl around her. He shares with her the poignant story of his mother, a cabaret singer and single parent who found solace in a man who had tried to take his own life due to the crushing weight of poverty. This vulnerable moment sparks a sense of empathy within Vasudha, who ultimately shuns Aarav’s romantic advances, citing her loyalty to another.

A turning point arrives when Aarav asks Vasudha to meet his mother, a gesture that marks the beginning of her acceptance of their love. However, this newfound openness is short-lived, as Vasudha soon confronts Hari at home, only to be met with anger and despair as he storms out, ultimately leading to his arrest.

In a stunning twist, Aarav’s efforts to save Hari by bribing the home minister are foiled when it becomes clear that Hari deliberately confessed to his crimes. The truth finally emerges: Hari sacrificed his life for their love, leaving Vasudha to grapple with the weight of this sacrifice and its far-reaching implications. As the curtains draw to a close, Aarav is left to confront the reality that he has been unwittingly pawns in a game of love, loyalty, and redemption - a poignant reminder that sometimes, the greatest sacrifices are made for the sake of those we hold dear.

As a means of absolution for Vasudha’s tormenting sense of guilt, Aarav embarks on a journey to Bastar, where Hari’s reputation is tarnished by allegations of murder, with the aim of vindicating his friend’s honor. Upon arrival, Aarav encounters Father Dayal, who sheds light on the truth, revealing Hari’s innocence and setting the record straight. The pungent aroma of the enigmatic flowers that initially brought Vasudha into Aarav’s life wafts through the air once more, beckoning him to venture deeper into the jungle. Unbeknownst to Aarav, this lush terrain conceals a treacherous landscape, replete with hidden dangers. His instinctive curiosity gets the better of him, and he unwittingly treads upon one of these booby traps. As the gravity of his situation becomes apparent, Aarav’s countenance brightens with a sense of resignation just prior to removing his foot from the lethal device.

Vasudha is informed of Aarav’s demise and, in her grief, she abandons Hari, who subsequently spends two arduous years searching for her. Eventually finding her, Vasudha confesses that she is cognizant of Hari’s selfless deception and declares that she is no longer intimidated by the shackles of tradition. With a hint of foreboding, Hari cautions her that their paths will inevitably cross again in the future. Hari waits patiently for twenty-one long years, only to be met with disappointment.

Fast-forwarding to the present, Vasudha yearns to reunite with Aarav’s spirit where he met his untimely demise. Hari takes Vasudha’s remains to the very same forest of Bastar, where Aarav breathed his last. It is here that Aarav and Vasudha finally find each other in death, their love transcending the boundaries of mortality.
