In the arid expanse of Tucson, Arizona—where the relentless sun scorches the earth and aspirations wither like neglected cacti—Dana Marschz, a recovering alcoholic and once-failed actor, has discovered a promising new path as a high school drama teacher. Despite his own mediocre acting journey, he has successfully fostered a small yet dedicated group of students, including Rand Posin and Epiphany Sellars, who are enchanted by his unique style and fervor for theater. However, the introduction of a new wave of students, forced into his class due to budget reductions, drastically alters Dana’s reality. In this new mix is Octavio, a brooding figure who directly challenges Dana’s authority, adding to the turmoil of his teaching experience.

As the semester unfolds, Dana’s existential dread grows heavier when Principal Rocker delivers disturbing news: the drama program is slated for closure at the end of the term. In a bid to inspire his students and reclaim a sense of purpose amidst the chaos, Dana hatches a daring idea for an original play. This ambitious project merges time travel and social taboos, highlighted by the fantastic number, “Rock Me Sexy Jesus,” featuring Jesus himself. His students dive headfirst into the production, yet tensions flare as Rand feels increasingly overshadowed by Octavio’s interpretation of Hamlet, ultimately leading him to storm out and take a copy of the play’s script to Principal Rocker.

To complicate matters further, Dana is struck by heartbreak when his wife Brie reveals she is leaving him for Gary, their seemingly unremarkable but fertile boarder. Adding to his despair, Dana learns of his infertility, leaving him crushed and desperate. Turning back to alcohol, he initially gives up on the show.
