Hard to Kill 1990

In 1983, Los Angeles police detective Mason Storm (Steven Seagal) is deeply involved in investigating a significant mob meeting at a pier. With his trusty video camera, Mason manages to capture a crucial moment on tape where a shadowy figure assures his companions of his political backing, declaring, >“And you can take that to the bank!” As Mason is spotted, he manages to flee the scene. On his drive home, he eagerly shares this evidence of corruption with his partner and his friend, Lt. O’Malley (Frederick Coffin), indicating he will present the tape shortly.

While stopping at a store to buy champagne and a teddy bear for his son, the scene quickly turns chaotic as robbers invade, with one of them shooting the clerk. Mason bravely intervenes, preventing further tragedy, and heads home, excited to celebrate with his wife Felicia (Bonnie Burroughs). Before doing so, he stashes the tape in a concealed spot within his kitchen wall. However, chaos ensues when a hit squad of corrupt policemen, including Jack Axel (Charles Boswell) and Max Quentero (Branscombe Richmond), break into their home. They fatally shoot Mason’s wife and leave him critically wounded, as his young son Sonny (Zachary Rosencrantz) manages to hide.

After being declared dead at the hospital, it turns out Mason is actually in a coma. Lt. O’Malley learns of this but is instructed to have Mason’s identity concealed as a “John Doe” to protect him from further threats. Meanwhile, Senator Vernon Trent (William Sadler), who has gained considerable power over the next seven years, is involved in the conspiracy against Mason.

Suddenly, Mason awakes from his coma, though his body is weak. One of his nurses, Andy (Kelly LeBrock), unwittingly makes a phone call that alerts sinister figures intent on ensuring Mason doesn’t survive. Understanding that danger is still present, Mason escapes with Andy’s help. They retreat to a friend’s secluded mountain home, where Mason employs acupuncture and meditation to regain his strength.

During his recuperation, Mason sees a campaign ad for Senator Trent, who ominously echoes, >“And you can take that to the bank!” Recognizing the voice, Mason vows revenge, quipping, >“I’m gonna take you to the bank, Senator Trent. To the blood bank!” Upon reuniting with O’Malley, he learns his son is alive and well, as O’Malley has been taking care of him in a safe environment to keep him away from danger.

Mason prepares for his confrontation with Trent and returns to his former home. Disguised as real estate agents, he retrieves his long-buried video camera and evidence. A tragic twist follows when he learns that O’Malley has been shot after handing the tape to Andy for safekeeping while ensuring young Sonny escapes.

As Mason finally locates his son, he confronts and eliminates the corrupt officers responsible for their pain. Mason then makes his way to Senator Trent’s opulent mansion, using stealth to dispose of Trent’s guards. A fierce showdown ensues between Mason and Jack Axel, culminating in a violent end for Axel. With Trent finally in his sights, Mason holds him at gunpoint when the police arrive on the scene. Instead of taking Mason into custody, they arrest Senator Trent, finally bringing justice to light. The narrative closes with Mason, Andy, and Sonny reuniting, leaving the mansion as Mason’s past actions continue to echo in the background, depicted through the chilling footage exposing Trent’s true nature.
