What is Esther's defining trait in her upscale private school?

Plot Summary

In the world of privilege and conformity, 13-year-old Esther Blueburger (Esther Blueburger) stands out as a misfit, struggling to find her place among the posh private school’s elite. Her home life is no less complicated, where her sociopathic twin brother and controlling mother relentlessly push her to conform to their expectations. As a last resort, Esther finds solace in an unlikely companion - Normal, a duck that has become her confidant - and frequently pours out her heart to God through prayer, pleading for a escape from the monotony of her life.

After a disastrous Bat Mitzvah, Esther’s chance encounter with Sunni, a free-spirited girl from the local public school, marks the beginning of an unlikely friendship. Unbeknownst to her parents, Esther begins attending Sunni’s school under the guise of a Swedish exchange student, reveling in the carefree atmosphere and forming bonds with Sunni’s friends and her laid-back single mother, Mary (Mary), who works as a stripper.

As Esther becomes more popular at her new school and succumbs to peer pressure, her friendship with Sunni starts to fray. Meanwhile, back at her old school, rumors spread that she was chosen for an elite social experiment, and upon her return, she’s treated like royalty. It’s not until the devastating news of Mary’s motorcycle accident and Sunni’s subsequent transfer to Esther’s private school under her grandmother’s care that Esther realizes the importance of being true to herself.

With a newfound sense of self-awareness, Esther sheds her pretenses and rekindles her friendship with Sunni, embracing the authenticity she had been searching for all along.
