Plot Summary

In the world of Alex Hitchins (Will Smith), love is just a matter of strategic nudges. His philosophy is that men only need a gentle push to win over their ideal partner, and he’s determined to help them achieve this goal through his unconventional matchmaking methods. The mastermind behind the operation claims that all it takes is three dates for sparks to fly and true love to ignite.

Flash back to Alex’s college days, where we find him struggling to fit in among his peers. A painful experience involving an unrequited crush on a girl who ultimately falls for another guy leaves him scarred and wary of opening himself up to heartache once more. This defining moment sets the stage for his future endeavors as a matchmaker extraordinaire.

Meanwhile, Sara (Eva Mendes) is returning from a brief vacation with some thrilling news: a high-profile client has been caught red-handed cheating on the wealthy Allegra Cole (Amber Valletta). As Sara’s professional star continues to rise, her personal life remains remarkably untouched, and she seems perfectly content without the burden of a romantic partner.

When Alex receives his next referral, he’s tasked with helping Albert, an endearing yet awkward individual who’s hopelessly smitten with none other than Allegra. Despite initial reservations, Alex agrees to take on the challenge, sensing genuine sincerity behind Albert’s pleading gaze. To get things started, Hitch instructs Albert to make a bold impression at their next meeting, where he’ll have the chance to showcase his mettle and win over Allegra’s heart.

As the financial advisor stands up to his boss, refusing to back down in the face of pressure, it becomes clear that Albert is more than just a pushover. His bold move catches Allegra off guard, and she expresses her gratitude for his unwavering support. Hitch observes from the sidelines, ever mindful of his own role as catalyst rather than center stage.

That same evening, Sara finds herself at the mercy of an overzealous suitor at a local bar, only to be rescued by none other than Hitch himself. As he disappears into the night, leaving behind a tantalizing hint of interest, Sara is left reeling and eager for more. When Hitch calls her the following day, setting up a ski date that ultimately ends in disaster, it seems as though their connection has hit a rocky patch.

Yet, despite the misstep, Hitch and Sara find themselves growing closer, their bond strengthened by shared experiences and mutual understanding.

As Hitch’s expertise in matchmaking is put to the test once again, he lends a helping hand to Albert as they prepare for a fashionable encounter with Allegra and her friend Maggie at an exclusive event. Despite initial missteps, including a less-than-spectacular dance routine and a few awkward moments of social navigation, Allegra appears to be thoroughly enjoying Albert’s company. Meanwhile, Hitch is faced with a new challenge when Vance, a prospective client (Jeffrey Donovan), approaches him with a rather…unusual request: securing a romantic tryst with someone he met at Sara’s friend Casey’s lingerie store. Hitch’s distaste for Vance is palpable, and he makes it clear that his services won’t be used to facilitate such an arrangement.

As the evening wears on, Sara and her boss become embroiled in a discussion about the recent gossip surrounding Allegra’s presence at an event with an unknown individual (Albert). Sara’s boss is understandably perturbed that she didn’t secure the scoop, prompting him to inquire as to Hitch’s connection to the pair. Hitch’s response - a vehement denial of any knowledge or involvement - only serves to pique Sara’s curiosity further.

Later, when Sara invites Hitch to dinner, her boss happens to be in attendance, and the two of them persistently probe Hitch for information about Allegra and Albert. As they dine, however, Hitch begins to experience a rather…unfortunate allergic reaction to the food, which culminates in an embarrassing display of swelling and subsequent treatment with Benedryl. Despite his compromised state, Hitch still manages to withhold the details Sara so desperately seeks, but does inadvertently reveal that Allegra and Albert have plans to attend a Knicks game the following evening. With this tantalizing tidbit, Sara sets her sights on capturing some incriminating photos for her column.

As the morning sun casts its gentle glow over the city, Casey’s euphoria from the previous night’s encounter with a charming stranger at the lingerie store has given way to disillusionment. The object of her affections, however, had vanished into thin air, leaving behind only a faint scent of disappointment and unrequited love. Her ire still simmering, Casey turns to Sara for guidance on how to exorcise the ghost of that forgettable evening.

Sara’s keen investigative skills lead her to uncover the enigmatic “date Dr.” responsible for Casey’s romantic misadventure. As it transpires, this mysterious figure is none other than Hitch (Will Smith), a self-proclaimed expert in the art of matchmaking. Sara, determined to expose Hitch’s dubious methods, sets him up on a fake meeting with her own acquaintance, hoping to catch him in the act.

Hitch’s reputation is left in tatters as Casey pens an exposé that spreads like wildfire through the gossip circles. Albert (Ashton Kutcher) and Allegra (Zooey Deschanel), two of Hitch’s most devoted clients, are caught in the crossfire, with Allegra mistakenly believing that her beau’s affections were a ruse all along.

The fallout from Casey’s article sends shockwaves through Hitch’s professional and personal life. As he prepares to vacate his apartment, Albert pays him a visit, pleading for an explanation and imploring him to rectify the situation. However, Hitch’s cynicism has taken root, leading him to declare that love is nothing more than a myth perpetuated by rom-coms and Hallmark cards.

Albert’s words of wisdom – that Hitch should not be in the business of matchmaking if he doesn’t genuinely believe in its power – pierce Hitch’s armor. He begins to question his own motivations and the harm caused by his actions. A newfound sense of empathy propels him into action, as he seeks out Allegra to reveal the truth about Albert’s genuine feelings for her. This candid confession ultimately wins Allegra back over to Albert, restoring balance to their relationship.

In this tumultuous aftermath, Hitch must confront the consequences of his own deceit and re-evaluate his stance on love. Will he find redemption or remain forever skeptical? Only time will tell as Hitch navigates the complexities of the human heart.

As Hitch’s inner turmoil reaches a boiling point, he embarks on an awkward yet earnest quest to confess his true feelings to Sara. His usually suave demeanor falters as he stumbles over his words, seeking guidance from the Dr. (his trusty mentor) to perfect his romantic pronouncements. However, Sara remains unconvinced, politely yet firmly urging Hitch to depart, only for him to persist in revealing his emotions. The moment of truth arrives when she opens her door to reveal an unexpected visitor – and a stark reminder that it’s never too late for a second chance.

As Sara is about to leave with the mysterious stranger, Hitch seizes the opportunity to reassert himself, literally jumping onto their car to halt their departure. The unexpected interlude ultimately yields a surprising revelation: the suitor is none other than her brother-in-law, prompting Sara to tenderly invite Hitch back into her life.

As the dust settles, the former adversaries share a heartwarming reunion, their bond strengthened by the shared experience. Meanwhile, Albert and Allegra (two endearing characters) celebrate their own union in a joyous ceremony that brings together friends and loved ones, as everyone basks in the warmth of newfound happiness.
