Joe Bonham, a young American soldier swept into the chaos of World War I, finds himself awakening in the stark confines of a hospital bed, his existence shattered by the harrowing impact of an artillery shell. In what must be one of the most tragic fates, he is stripped of his eyes, ears, mouth, nose, and limbs, yet, astonishingly, he remains fully conscious and capable of thought, rendering him a prisoner within his own body. Caught in the relentless tides of memory and imagination, he reflects on his prior life, immersed in the warmth of his Christian Science family and the affection of his girlfriend, Kareen.

Amidst this torment, Joe discovers an unexpected connection with a compassionate young nurse, who deeply perceives the agony that resides within him, even as the medical staff mistakenly categorize him as being in a vegetative state. It is a bittersweet bond, as she provides a flicker of understanding in a world that has largely turned its back on him.

In a desperate bid for communication, Joe resorts to banging his head against the pillow to tap out messages in Morse code, ultimately pleading for help. When queried about his desires, his haunting wish—to be put on display in a glass coffin as a testament to the wars’ grim realities—stuns the doctors. The Army’s regulations, however, dash these hopes, leading Joe to plead persistently for euthanasia as a release from his unimaginable suffering.

With the harsh realization that the U.S. Army will dismiss both his appeals, trapping him in what he perceives as a living death, he encounters yet another layer of betrayal. In a moment filled with both compassion and conflict, his sympathetic nurse attempts to end his suffering by clamping his breathing tube, yet is halted by her supervisor just before he can fade away into peace.

Thus, Joe finds himself abandoned in solitude within a utility room of the hospital, the world around him growing dimmer as he weakly repeats a haunting mantra: > “S.O.S. Help me.” This poignant plea reflects a deep yearning for escape from the insidious grip of fate that has rendered him invisible, a mere whisper of the vibrant life he once cherished. This story is not just about war; it’s about the profound struggles of the human spirit against the most harrowing of circumstances, interweaving themes of loss, longing, and the desperate hope for compassion in the darkest of times.
