As the story unfolds, a demolition crew accidentally brings down a dilapidated building, freeing a mystical genie named Kazaam from an ancient lamp hidden within a boombox. Meanwhile, 14-year-old Max Conner faces the trials of adolescence, battling issues like bullying and self-doubt while trying to establish his own identity. Everything changes when Max stumbles upon the abandoned structure, allowing Kazaam to emerge from the ruins and take residence in the boombox.
Max’s life takes another turn when his mother reveals her intention to remarry a charming fireman, Travis O’Neil, a man Max resents deeply. As he confronts his mother about his actual father, Nick Matteo — a charming musical talent agent with a sketchy background — Max starts to piece together the puzzle of his family’s history. Sensing Max’s emotional struggles, Kazaam reappears and encourages him to make a wish.
After reuniting with his estranged father, Max is introduced to an interesting ensemble of characters at Nick’s agency, which includes a variety of musicians and industry insiders. Kazaam delights Max by showcasing his remarkable abilities through a series of impromptu bike races, using telekinesis to create a spectacle that leaves Max in awe.
Kazaam convinces Max to make his first wish, resulting in a whimsical shower of junk food falling from the sky. As Max grapples with the incredible power now at his disposal, he realizes that he is in complete command over Kazaam—at least until he exhausts his final two wishes. Their adventures lead them to Nick’s agency for a lively concert that captivates Malik, the shady nightclub owner who plots to exploit Kazaam’s mystical gifts.
Now residing in Max’s household under the guise of a tutor, Kazaam and Max develop a strong bond. The genie shares a heartfelt rap about his past, while Max opens up concerning his troubled relationship with his father. However, when Max tries to utilize his wishes to heal the rift between his parents, Kazaam must inform him that some intricate emotional desires are beyond his powers.
The fragile camaraderie between Max and Kazaam is threatened by Malik’s relentless pursuits, culminating in a violent confrontation where Nick is assaulted by Malik’s henchmen over a stolen master tape. In a moment of desperation, Max seeks Kazaam’s aid, only to find the genie reluctant to assist due to his burgeoning fame as a rapper. Tensions escalate and Max makes a life-altering choice, using his second wish to manifest a replacement tape, which inadvertently distances him from Kazaam. The repercussions of this decision echo throughout the lives of everyone involved.
As events unfold, Malik seizes control of Kazaam’s boombox, dragging Max and his father into a twisted reality. Pressured, Kazaam must comply with Malik’s demands, however, the genie’s formidable powers ultimately prove too grand to be tamed. With a spectacular burst of magic, Kazaam breaks free, sending Malik and his henchmen fleeing. The genie delivers poetic justice to Malik by transforming him into a basketball that meets its end in a fiery garbage disposal.
Yet, the celebration is fleeting, as Kazaam’s gaze falls upon Max’s lifeless body, and he is overwhelmed with regret for failing to grant his friend’s wish for reconciliation with his father. Overwhelmed by grief, Kazaam evolves into a more powerful djinn capable of reviving the deceased.
With his new abilities, Kazaam brings Max back to life, pulling him from the flames that rage around them. Travis O’Neil arrives just in time for them to escape together. In the aftermath, Max’s father expresses a hope to mend their relationship before leaving with the authorities. Kazaam, now transformed into a djinn, drifts away into the unknown, leaving behind a wistful smile as he reflects on the complexities of human life.
In his new form, Kazaam encounters the exasperated pleas of his girlfriend, who insists he find a job. However, oblivious to the concept of work, Kazaam is left to find his way in this unexplored realm. As he ventures off into the distance, Max watches with a heartfelt smile, knowing that their incredible journey is just beginning.
