In a tumultuous period leading up to the Second Sino-Japanese War, Chen Zhen finds himself embroiled in a treacherous world of intrigue and deception. After valiantly fighting alongside Allied forces against the Germans during World War I in France, he returns to China under the guise of his deceased comrade, Qi Tianyuan. This new identity allows him to seamlessly integrate into the pulsating heart of Shanghai’s nightlife and underground resistance.

As he navigates the city’s shadowy networks, Chen forms a complex alliance with Liu Yutian, the charismatic proprietor of a high-stakes nightclub that serves as a nexus for espionage and diplomatic maneuvering. Here, he becomes infatuated with Kiki, a captivating nightclub singer whose true intentions remain cloaked in ambiguity. One pivotal night, Chen uncovers a nefarious plot by Japanese operatives targeting General Zeng, the heir to a formidable northern warlord’s legacy. Their sinister plan intends to frame rival General Zhuo for the assassination, igniting a catastrophic civil war that would pave the way for Japan’s encroaching invasion.

Assuming the mantle of a masked avenger, Chen—disguised as Qi Tianyuan—leaps into action to thwart the assassination attempt, ultimately saving General Zeng from imminent peril. However, this courageous endeavor entwines him deeper in a perilous game against Colonel Chikaraishi Takeshi, the merciless head of Japan’s espionage agency in Shanghai.

As tensions rise, Chikaraishi unleashes chaos by distributing a list of anti-Japanese activists, creating widespread panic. He then confronts Chen in Liu’s nightclub, challenging him to protect those on the list while he seeks to eliminate them. What ensues is a frenzied and dangerous race against time, with Chen and Chikaraishi engaged in a strategic duel that traverses perilous landscapes and deadly confrontations. While some activists successfully escape Shanghai, others tragically fall victim to Chikaraishi’s lethal enforcers. Meanwhile, Kiki’s true loyalties remain shrouded in secrecy, especially as she’s coerced by Chikaraishi into committing a dreadful act that could alter the course of events.

As Chen grapples with the mounting pressures of his mission, he also begins to unravel Kiki’s hidden motives and ultimately confronts Colonel Chikaraishi in a gripping showdown. The stakes couldn’t be higher, with the very future of China hanging by a thread. In the escalating chaos, Chen’s allies launch a daring assault on the Japanese command center, unleashing a wave of destruction before retreating under heavy fire. However, the Japanese retaliate with ruthless precision, tracking down Chen’s comrades and eradicating them mercilessly.

In a tragic turn of events, Chen is left for dead after being violently thrown from a moving vehicle, plunging into a coma as he fights to recover from his grievous injuries. As Shanghai stands on the brink of occupation, General Zhuo meets his fate in battle, with his forces crumbling in disarray. In a moment of heart-wrenching desperation, Chikaraishi declares he will take Kiki’s life before she can arrive, igniting a fury within Chen that drives him to exact brutal revenge on the Japanese soldiers.

Emerging victorious in a climactic face-off with Chikaraishi, Chen realizes that his alter ego remains vital in inspiring the rising movement against their oppressors. With a new officer stepping into Chikaraishi’s shoes, Chen reclaims his iconic costume, prepared to confront the Japanese forces head-on and galvanize resistance against the overwhelming odds stacked against them.
