What is the badge number of Max Rockatansky?

Plot Summary

In a gritty, post-apocalyptic Australia ravaged by oil shortages, the once-thriving land teeters on the brink of chaos. Amidst this backdrop of desperation, the Main Force Patrol (MFP) - affectionately dubbed “The Bronze” by its detractors - valiantly attempts to preserve what’s left of order in the Outback. At the forefront of this struggle is Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson), a tenacious and unyielding young police officer with badge number MFP4073.

When Crawford Montazano, aka Nightrider, manages to escape from custody by committing an unthinkable act of violence, Max becomes hot on his heels in a heart-pumping high-speed chase that ultimately culminates in Nightrider’s fiery demise. As the dust settles, the police chief issues a stern warning: Nightrider’s gang will now be hell-bent on exacting revenge for their fallen leader.

As the MFP scrambles to contain the fallout, Nightrider’s vengeful cohorts - led by the ruthless Toecutter (Hugh Keays-Byrne) - unleash a wave of terror upon the civilian population. They pillage and plunder, vandalizing property, stealing fuel, and leaving destruction in their wake. The full fury of their wrath is unleashed upon a hapless couple who dare to attempt escape, as they are brutally assaulted, their vehicle left in shambles.

Max and his trusted comrade, Jim Goose (Steve Bisley), are summoned to the scene of the heinous crime, where they stumble upon Toecutter’s young protégé, Johnny the Boy (Tim Burns), amidst the wreckage. As the authorities close in on him, Johnny’s drug-addled ravings reveal his allegiance to Nightrider’s gang, sparking a mix of disdain and disgust from Goose - whose own personal demons were stirred by the traumatic events of the earlier pursuit. Though they could have easily ended Johnny’s life, Max and Goose opt for arrest instead, dragging the young thug away in chains as the darkness that threatens to consume their world continues to gather momentum.

As Johnny languishes in the decrepit Halls of Justice, awaiting a visit from the courts, the outcome of his trial hangs precariously in the balance. However, when the legal eagles finally arrive, they are met with a shocking revelation: no witnesses have come forward to testify against Johnny, and consequently, he is granted his freedom. The courtroom erupts into chaos as Goose, consumed by rage and a thirst for vengeance, launches a furious attack on Johnny, only to be restrained by authorities.

Meanwhile, Bubba Zanetti, the second-in-command of the Toecutter’s biker gang, arrives at the courthouse to collect Johnny, despite his own personal animosity towards him. As they depart, tensions simmer beneath the surface, fueled by a deep-seated dislike for Johnny’s rowdy behavior and lack of finesse.

In the aftermath, Johnny seizes the opportunity to exact revenge on Goose, sabotaging his motorcycle while he is distracted at the Sugartown Cabaret. The next day, Goose’s ill-fated ride comes to a halt when his rear wheel locks up, sending him flying off the bike. Miraculously, Goose survives the ordeal without so much as a scratch.

As Goose nurses his wounds and sets about recovering from the incident, Johnny sees fit to strike again, this time targeting Goose’s borrowed ute by launching a brake drum through its windshield. The resulting accident leaves the vehicle in shambles, with fuel leaking from the tank and spreading across the surrounding terrain. It is at this point that Johnny, egged on by the Toecutter himself, sets fire to the wreckage, leaving Goose to burn alongside his charred remains.

The devastating consequences of Johnny’s actions are made all too clear when Max Rockatansky pays a visit to the hospital’s burn ward, only to be met with the gruesome sight of Goose’s mangled body. This senseless violence serves as the catalyst for Max’s disillusionment with the MFP and his subsequent decision to resign from the force.

In an attempt to escape the chaos that has consumed his life, Max embarks on a road trip with his wife, Jessie, and their infant son, seeking solace in the relatively peaceful coastal region north of their home. However, this respite is short-lived, as Toecutter’s gang tracks down Jessie, harassing her at every turn. She manages to evade their clutches initially but eventually finds herself face-to-face with the very same thugs who seek to do her harm.

As she and her son attempt to make a break for it, they are cruelly run over by the gang, left lifeless in the middle of the road. Max arrives too late to prevent this senseless tragedy, his wife’s injuries proving too severe to survive. In the aftermath, Max is left to grapple with the devastating consequences of his decision to abandon the MFP and the senseless violence that has consumed his world.

As an inferno of fury ignites within him, Max (re)emerges as a vengeful lawman, armed with his trusty cut-off shotgun and piloting his supercharged black Pursuit Special like a force to be reckoned with. With calculated precision, he stalks down the gang members, systematically eliminating them from the equation: a group of outlaws is forced off a rickety bridge at breakneck speed; Max dispatches Bubba (his shotgun) after the latter first takes a shot at him with his pistol, leaving Max with a permanent limp. Pursuing Toecutter into a forbidden territory, Max forces the gang leader into the path of an oncoming tractor trailer, crushing him in a devastating head-on collision.

In the aftermath of this carnage, Max comes across Johnny the Boy scavenging for boots at the scene of a catastrophic crash. Johnny desperately tries to convince Max that the deceased driver was already lifeless when he found him and that his addiction has driven him to the brink of madness. However, Max remains unmoved, cuffing Johnny’s ankle to the mangled wreckage with a ruptured petrol tank as a ticking time bomb. With a crude delay fuse lit and a hacksaw in hand, Max leaves Johnny a heart-wrenching choice: saw through the handcuffs (a 10-minute ordeal) or his own ankle (a gruesome 5-minute option), before abandoning him to the desolate outback.

As Max disappears into the distance, the camera pans back to reveal his car’s imposing silhouette against the backdrop of an apocalyptic landscape - a massive explosion still smoldering in the distance. Undeterred by the inferno he left behind, Max drives on, lost in thought as the rain pours down around him.
