For two years, New York City grapples with Strickler’s Disease, an epidemic threatening the lives of its children. Despite relentless efforts, researchers struggle to develop a vaccine or cure. However, a breakthrough comes with the realization that common cockroaches are the disease’s primary carriers. Enter Dr. Peter Mann (Jeremy Northam) from the Center for Disease Control, who collaborates with Dr. Susan Tyler (Mira Sorvino), a renowned entomologist. Susan ingeniously creates a genetically engineered insect, dubbed the Judas Breed, designed to produce a lethal enzyme for cockroaches while ensuring its own extinction within 180 days.

Fast forward six months, Peter proudly announces the epidemic’s end at a press conference. Happily married to Susan, they dream of starting a family, although Susan harbors some doubts about their genetic meddling. Three years later, on a dreary night, their lives take a darker turn when a preacher is murdered by a shadowy figure in a dilapidated church. Witnessing this is Chuy, a ten-year-old autistic boy (Alexander Goodwin), who becomes fixated on the attacker’s peculiar sounds.

The following morning, Peter arrives at the church to discover a quarantine situation involving illegal immigrants carrying yellow fever. His investigation leads him into unsettling discoveries, revealing samples containing human clothing buttons. Meanwhile, Susan, working in her lab, imprudently engages with a strange bug brought in by local kids. Her curiosity results in an unfortunate bite, and when she realizes that the bug shares similarities with the Judas Breed, she worries about its possible survival.

As events unfold, Susan’s pursuit of the bug leads her into a dangerous discovery about the Judas Breed’s potential for reproduction. Fateful encounters ensue when Chuy and his friends venture into the subway, threatening their lives as they cross paths with the lurking threat. With chilling necessity, Susan consults her former mentor, Dr. Gates ([F. Murray Abraham]), who fears that the creatures may have evaded their engineered demise.

In a gripping spiral of events, Chuy’s infatuation with the bugs leads him deeper into danger while Manny, his father, searches for him, ultimately facing horrors that leave him torn apart. The tension escalates as Peter, Susan, and a cohort of allies delve deeper into the subway darkness, discovering nests of oothecas. The claustrophobic environment escalates into chaos when deadly encounters shape their struggle for survival against the breeding male of the Judas adults.

The culminating climactic battle brings Peter to the Judas Breeds’ nursery, where he detonates the colony to prevent further devastation. Meanwhile, Susan, left to protect Chuy, devises her desperate plan to lure the breeding male away from the boy, culminating in a last-minute escape that tests their resilience.

In the aftermath of the inferno that destroys the colony, the remnant of hope shines through as Chuy and Susan, wrapped in blankets, await news. A symbol of survival emerges when Peter appears, having escaped from the fire’s wrath, reinforcing the bond that has withstood the upheaval. Their reunion serves not only as a testament to their struggles but also as a foundation for the future they can now cautiously embrace together.
