Missing: A young woman investigates the disappearance of her mother and her boyfriend during a vacation to Colombia.

What prompts June to start investigating her mother's disappearance?

Plot Summary

In a poignant archival recording, a tender moment is captured between a young June Allen and her deceased father James, whose untimely passing from a brain tumor occurred shortly after the video was filmed. Years later, June’s mother Grace embarks on a week-long getaway to Cartagena, Colombia, accompanied by Kevin, leaving June in the capable care of friend Heather, a divorce lawyer who harbors subtle resentment towards Kevin for his presence in her life.

A week passes, and June is entrusted with the task of retrieving her mother and Kevin from Los Angeles International Airport. However, they fail to arrive, prompting June to take matters into her own hands. She initially reaches out to the FBI, but ultimately decides to investigate independently, leveraging an arsenal of digital tools at her disposal. Her investigation leads her to hire Javier, a Colombian gig worker who agrees to assist her in exchange for a modest fee.

As June delves deeper into Kevin’s online presence, she uncovers a plethora of aliases and a criminal record marked by a history of scams targeting unsuspecting women. Convinced that Kevin has orchestrated her mother’s disappearance, June enlists Javier’s services to track down clues in Colombia. Her digital sleuthing leads her to Jimmy, a self-proclaimed pastor at a Christian rehabilitation center for former convicts in Nevada. He presents a conflicting narrative, claiming that Kevin has undergone a genuine transformation and is deeply enamored with Grace.

June’s online pursuits also grant her access to her mother’s dating profile, where she discovers a trail of messages revealing that Grace was already aware of Kevin’s troubled past. Meanwhile, FBI agent Elijah Park shares footage purporting to show a group of criminals kidnapping Kevin and Grace in Colombia. June’s subsequent investigation reveals this to be a fabricated event, as Kevin had hired an actress named Rachel Page to impersonate her mother, who had actually been kidnapped en route to the airport beforehand.

As the case gains national attention, Rachel confesses that she was unaware of Kevin’s intentions when she accompanied him to Colombia. The revelation sparks speculation about Grace’s potential involvement in her own disappearance. June’s unwavering faith in her mother’s innocence prompts her to redirect her suspicions towards Heather, who is revealed to have been secretly communicating with Kevin. In a shocking turn of events, June discovers Heather’s lifeless body in a storage closet.

As the events of the police raid in Colombia unfold before her eyes, June’s world is turned upside down once again. The brutal killing of Kevin (despite his surrender) serves as a harsh reminder that justice can be fleeting. With her leads exhausted and her spirit crushed, June teeters on the brink of despair, only to find solace in the digital realm. Delving into her mother’s email account, she uncovers a menacing message directed at Grace, which sets her on a trail of discovery.

As if fate had intervened, June stumbles upon security cameras that Kevin had purchased for their abandoned Nevada vacation home. The coincidental timing is eerily significant, as it provides a vital link to her past and a glimmer of hope for the future. Just then, Jimmy arrives, revealing himself to be none other than June’s father. The truth begins to unravel like a twisted thread - Grace had been emotionally fragile, taken away from him after false charges were levied against him.

However, Jimmy’s admission also exposes his own dark secrets: he was a domestic abuser, his drug addiction putting the lives of everyone around him at risk. Heather and Grace had shielded June from this painful reality by telling her that Jimmy had succumbed to cancer. In a twisted attempt to reconcile with the past, Jimmy enlisted Kevin (whom he met in prison) to pose as a potential suitor, allowing him to track down Grace and June.

As June’s world becomes increasingly distorted, James seizes her, taking her to their old vacation home where Grace is also being held captive. In a heart-wrenching reunion, the two women face off against each other before James takes matters into his own hands, shooting Grace. As he prepares to make his escape with June, Grace exacts a devastating revenge, fatally stabbing him in the neck with a shard of broken glass.

In the aftermath, several months pass, and June is enrolled in college. The Unfiction true crime show has adapted their story for public consumption, while Grace has formed an unlikely bond with Javier, introduced by June herself. As June texts her mother from afar, expressing her love, Grace responds in kind, a testament to the unbreakable ties that bind them together.
