What is Vince Majestyk's profession?

Plot Summary

Vince Majestyk, a rugged individualist with a storied past, has rebuilt his life as a farmer and watermelon farm owner in rural Colorado. The rustic landscape serves as the backdrop for Vince’s latest endeavor: a harvest that must be completed to keep his farm from going under. However, the arrival of Bobby Kopas, a small-time hood with big ambitions, threatens Vince’s carefully constructed existence. Kopas attempts to strong-arm Vince into employing a dubious workforce of unskilled drunks to reap his crop, but the veteran farmer has no intention of succumbing to such manipulation.

With Kopas’ shotgun-wielding tactics foiled, Vince turns to a more reliable and labor-friendly solution: hiring experienced Mexican migrant workers, including Nancy Chavez, a skilled crops picker and union leader. As the harvest progresses, a romantic spark ignites between Vince and Nancy, their mutual respect and attraction blossoming amidst the arduous work.

But Kopas refuses to let his plans go undeterred. He files assault charges against Vince, leading to his arrest before he can complete the harvest. Behind bars, Vince crosses paths with Lt. McAllen, a lawman familiar with the intricacies of Vince’s checkered past. The prison’s unsavory underbelly is also home to Frank Renda, a notorious mafia hit man who will stop at nothing to carry out his employer’s orders.

When a transport bus arrives to ferry Vince and his fellow inmates to court sentencing, chaos erupts as Renda’s henchmen attempt to break him out. In the ensuing mayhem, several officers fall victim to their brutal tactics. Vince seizes control of the situation by commandeering the bus with Renda still in handcuffs, ultimately depositing him at his hunting cabin in the nearby foothills. As the dust settles, Vince finds himself face-to-face with a desperate and dangerous adversary, forced to navigate the treacherous landscape of his own past and the machinations of those who seek to exploit it.

As Vince’s desperation to trade his captive, Renda, for freedom reaches a boiling point, he hatches a plan to turn the tables on his adversary. Renda, sensing an opportunity to buy his way out of the predicament, offers Vince a handsome sum of $25,000 to set him free. However, Vince remains unmoved by the proposal and instead decides to play along, pretending to be swayed by the offer while secretly making arrangements for both the police and Renda’s mafia contacts to converge on their location. Meanwhile, Renda’s girlfriend, Wiley, arrives on the scene, only to find that Vince has managed to outmaneuver her beau yet again.

Undeterred, Renda learns of his charges being dropped and meets with his trusted right-hand man, Gene Lundy, who advises him to take a well-deserved break in Mexico. However, Renda’s desire for revenge against Vince proves too strong, and he ultimately decides to forego the vacation plans. Upon their return, Renda and Wiley are greeted by Lundy, who introduces them to Kopas, a man whose dubious nature immediately rubs Renda the wrong way.

As it becomes clear that Vince has hired migrant workers to harvest his melons and that some of the deputies have been disguising themselves as road workers for a stakeout job, Renda’s ire is further fueled. He orders Lundy to pull over and instructs Kopas to exit the vehicle, informing him that he will be doing exactly as he is told before speeding away from the scene with his cohorts.

As the moon casts its silvery glow over the rural landscape, Renda and his cohorts arrive at the farm, their intentions crystal clear: to take out Vince. However, they find themselves faced with an empty house, their target nowhere to be found. Instead, they unleash their wrath upon the hired hands, forcing them to scatter in fear, while the once-lush melon crop is reduced to a shredded mess by the relentless barrage of sub-machine gun fire. Meanwhile, Vince and Nancy are sipping drinks at a local watering hole, blissfully unaware of the chaos that has unfolded back at the farm. That is, until Renda appears, his malevolent presence palpable as he warns Vince of his impending demise. Vince’s response? A swift and decisive kick to Renda’s midsection, further fueling the latter’s anger.

The next day, Vince returns to the farm, his eyes met with a gruesome sight: the ravaged melons, a stark reminder of the violence that has descended upon their peaceful existence. His friend Larry Mendoza, one of the hired hands, takes it upon himself to salvage what remains of the crop and transport it to town for shipment out of state. Additionally, Vince instructs Larry to safely deliver Nancy to a distant bus station, hoping to safeguard her from the growing threat that looms large. As Larry departs with Nancy in tow, he makes his way to the train yard, only to be confronted by Kopas and Renda’s men, who brutally cripple him by slamming their car into his unsuspecting form.

In the aftermath of this brutal assault, Vince receives a visit from McAllen at the hospital, where the authorities are tending to Larry’s wounds. McAllen reveals that the city police have set up a stakeout at Renda’s mountain hideout, but the elusive villain has yet to make an appearance since the violence escalated. Despite McAllen’s assurances that Vince will be the next target on Renda’s hit list if he doesn’t back off, Vince stubbornly refuses to abandon his post, choosing instead to confront the danger head-on.

As Vince returns home, he’s met with an unexpected surprise - Nancy has somehow managed to hitch a ride back to the farm. Meanwhile, Lundy arrives at the farmhouse, where Kopas and his cohorts are keeping watchful eyes on the property. Unbeknownst to them, Vince has already made his escape in the back of his pickup truck, courtesy of Nancy’s expert driving skills. The ensuing chase sees Vince turning the tables on Renda’s men, using his cunning and resourcefulness to take down most of their number during a high-stakes pursuit through the foothills.

Realizing they’re now the hunted, Renda retreats to the lodge, where he’s joined by Wiley, Lundy, and Kopas. In an attempt to regain the upper hand, Renda sends Wiley out to negotiate with Vince, hoping to lure him into a trap. However, Vince is one step ahead, dispatching Wiley to find the police instead. With Renda’s men now hot on his heels, Vince decides to take matters into his own hands and launches a surprise assault on the cabin.

In the ensuing chaos, Lundy becomes the ultimate casualty, sacrificed by Renda in an attempt to save his own skin. As Kopas begins to lose faith in Renda’s leadership, he makes a break for it, only to be caught off guard by Vince. Realizing that Kopas is still loyal, Vince decides to spare his life - as long as he agrees to reveal Renda’s whereabouts.

With Renda now lying in a heap on the cabin floor, Vince jumps through the front window and delivers a fatal blow. As Kopas attempts to make a hasty retreat, he discovers that Vince has pilfered the keys to his car. The police, accompanied by Nancy and the recently apprehended Wiley, arrive at the scene, taking Kopas into custody.

As McAllen surveys the aftermath of the carnage, he’s left with no choice but to take Vince in for questioning. However, after a moment’s consideration, Vince declines the offer and instead sets off into the sunset with Nancy by his side, leaving the authorities to deal with the fallout.
