What role does Dash have at Tides High School?

Plot Summary

As Dash and his trusted companion Assaf navigate their sophomore year at Tides High School, a institution precariously perched on the edge of a geological fault line, they find themselves immersed in a world of creative expression as co-authors for the school newspaper. Under the watchful eye of their editor, Verti, the duo’s collaborative efforts seem to be a harmonious symphony - until a sudden shift in dynamics occurs when Verti assigns Assaf a solo project, leaving Dash feeling jilted and betrayed. This perceived slight festers into an article that not only hurts Assaf but also inadvertently sparks a chain reaction that sets off a series of events. Principal Grimm, fueled by the fallout from Dash’s hurtful words, takes it upon himself to brand Dash with a permanent mark on his record.

In a bold move, Dash decides to take matters into his own hands and infiltrates the school archives in search of evidence to exonerate himself. His discovery of forged documents revealing Grimm’s complicity in the auditorium’s questionable construction is merely the beginning of a journey that will change everything. As he stumbles upon Mary, a high-achieving junior who has lost her confiscated cell phone, Dash finds an unlikely ally in his quest for truth. Together, they try to sound the alarm about the impending danger, only to be thwarted by Grimm’s tactics and ultimately find themselves stuck in detention as the school’s auditorium opens, causing the very foundation of their institution to give way, precipitating a catastrophic plunge into the ocean.

In the aftermath of this disaster, Dash must confront his own emotions as he rescues Assaf and Verti from the sophomore level library. As they struggle to find air pockets amidst the waves, Dash finds himself on the brink of drowning before being plucked from the water by Lunch Lady Lorraine’s quick thinking. Meanwhile, at the junior level, the teachers are struggling to maintain order among the surviving students.

It is only when Lorraine steps in to calm a tense situation that the full extent of her resourcefulness becomes apparent as she saves Verti from a group of ruthless students peddling drugs. As the group of survivors - now including Mary and Lorraine - decides to make their way to the roof, they are met with resistance from the rest of the student body.

At the senior level, they stumble upon Brent Daniels, who has somehow managed to rally a motley crew around him. In a surprise twist, Grimm appears, revealing his role in the auditorium’s construction and sacrificing himself to open up the bleachers, allowing the group to scale their way to safety.

As rescue helicopters begin to descend, Lorraine uses her skills to pluck a few stragglers from the jaws of disaster while others manage to escape using makeshift rafts. Amidst this chaos, Dash and Assaf vow to immortalize their experience in the pages of a book, determined to share their story with the world.

As the weeks tick by, the remnant group of survivors converges on a jubilant celebration marking the release of Dash and Assaf’s long-awaited literary endeavor, “Our Entire High School Sinking into the Sea”. However, the critical reception of their work is met with a decidedly lukewarm response, with many reviewers panning the book for its meandering prose. Meanwhile, amidst the revelry, Lorraine (Lorraine) takes Dash to task over his writing style, her tone laced with a mixture of exasperation and resignation as she contemplates the daunting prospect of catering to an entirely new crop of students come the start of the new year. With a hint of weariness etched on her face, she bid farewell to the festivities, leaving Dash to ponder the mixed reviews that threaten to tarnish the otherwise triumphant launch of their collaborative project.
