What critical item does Karen Bentley need to deliver?

Plot Summary

As the news of her partner’s untimely demise reverberates across the globe, agent Karen Bentley finds herself suddenly thrust into a high-stakes mission to deliver a critical flight plan from Europe to Chicago. The plans, cleverly concealed within a miniature scorpion medallion worn around her neck, hold the key to launching a hundred American bomber planes into action. With the weight of responsibility settling upon her shoulders, Karen sets course for New York City, where she makes a daring escape from enemy agents by hiding in plain sight at a variety theatre.

There, she charms Larry Haines, an actor whose stage presence is rivaled only by his endearing penguin sidekick, Percy. Larry’s contract to appear in a Hollywood film provides the perfect cover for Karen’s true intentions, and as they prepare to depart New York, she skillfully plants the medallion on Larry before he boards the train. Unbeknownst to him, this innocuous-looking actor is now unwittingly carrying a vital piece of intel across the country.

Meanwhile, German agents Mme. Stephanie Runick and Dr. Hugo Streger are hot on Larry’s trail, their suspicious behavior drawing attention from fellow passengers as they follow the unlikely duo to Albany. It’s there that Karen boards the train, her eyes fixed on Larry’s unsuspecting form as he paces back and forth in the corridor.

When the train makes a stop in Chicago, Karen seizes the opportunity to pilfer Larry’s suitcase, now containing the medallion-adorned jacket, and make her escape. But not before she finds herself at the scene of yet another murder, forcing her to improvise and redirect her mission to Los Angeles.

As the stakes grow higher, Karen is forced to reveal her true identity to Larry, who, despite being initially perplexed by her sudden disappearance and reappearance, proves himself a worthy ally. Together, they concoct a clever ruse to throw off their pursuers: a fake domestic dispute that culminates in a heated argument, complete with simulated violence.

With the authorities none the wiser, Karen and Larry are whisked away from the scene of the crime, leaving the German agents and their nefarious plans behind. As they navigate the treacherous landscape of espionage and deception, one thing is clear: only together can they hope to survive the perils that lie ahead.

As Karen and Larry reunite in the police patrol car, their earlier discord dissipates, only to be swiftly rekindled by the relentless pursuit of law enforcement. The catalyst for this chaos lies in an anonymous tip-off from German agents, accusing them of murdering a British operative - a claim that gains widespread attention through the news channels, with Larry being branded as the “love slayer”. In the midst of their frantic bid to evade capture, Karen and Larry find themselves inexorably drawn to each other. As they navigate the perils of their escape, they discover solace in one another’s company, eventually seeking refuge atop Union Hall for a night of quiet contemplation.

However, the tranquility is short-lived, as morning reveals that they have been spotted by the authorities once more. They seize an opportunity to blend in with the crowd on a sightseeing tour bus, which they hijack and subsequently commandeer a plane headed for Los Angeles. As fuel levels dwindle, they make an emergency landing in a desolate region, only to be arrested for pilfering food from a farm.

In prison, their reputation as the couple responsible for the British operative’s demise precedes them. Escaping from captivity, they find themselves pursued once again - this time by a determined German contingent. Utilizing a freight train as their getaway vehicle, they make a daring leap to Los Angeles. Upon arriving at the destination Karen had been slated to visit, they are met with an unsettling discovery: it is not an anticipated meeting, but rather a funeral parlor. The Germans have beaten them to the punch, having taken the British agent hostage.

Karen and Larry manage to elude capture once more, fleeing the scene to seek refuge at a nearby U.S. Air base. It is here that they deliver the top-secret bomber plans, their journey serving as a testament to the transformative power of love in the face of adversity.
