Plot Summary

As Ambar Cruz (pursuing a new life as an undocumented immigrant in Ohio after years of devoted care for her terminally ill mother) navigates the labyrinthine corridors of the boarding house run by Red and his enigmatic brother Becker, she finds herself ensnared in a web of eerie visions and unsettling nightmares. The apparitions of ghostly women haunting the premises are only exacerbated by the dark, ancient energies emanating from an otherworldly stone box that seems to hold secrets of its own. Amidst this surreal backdrop, Ambar forms fleeting connections with fellow immigrant women Freja, Petra, and Maria, whose lives are intertwined in ways both poignant and perilous.

As Red’s attention wavers, Ambar seizes the opportunity to delve into the forbidden sanctum of his secret study, uncovering a treasure trove of artifacts, tapes, and files documenting the arcane rituals of Mesoamerican cults, which eerily echo the stone box’s foreboding presence. The discovery of these relics serves as a harbinger for Ambar’s descent into a world of mysticism and terror.

Meanwhile, Kinsi, Ambar’s coworker, exploits her trust with a fraudulent promise of a fake ID, leaving Ambar destitute and desperate. Her under-the-table factory job is soon lost due to an unfortunate misunderstanding with her boss, further exacerbating her sense of disorientation and vulnerability.

As the boundaries between reality and the unknown begin to blur, Ambar’s room becomes a hotbed of paranormal activity, as pleas for help from invisible entities pierce the air, and visions of Freja continue to haunt her. Fearing for her sanity, Ambar reaches out to an old family friend, Beto, only to be rebuffed. With options dwindling, she flees the boarding house in a state of disarray.

In a subsequent encounter with Red at a diner, Ambar’s desperation leads him to manipulate her into returning to the house, where Becker’s true intentions are slowly revealed. The elder brother’s sinister plans involve Ambar herself, and as he performs an unsettling ritual, spreading an otherworldly substance on her face, she realizes that she has become trapped in a world of darkness and deception.

As Petra and Maria turn to Ambar for help escaping the clutches of Becker, they discover a shared connection: both have been plagued by nightmares featuring the enigmatic stone box. This convergence of their experiences serves as a catalyst for Ambar’s own quest for liberation, as she confronts the malevolent forces head-on. The visions of dead women continue to haunt her, but with each passing moment, Ambar grows more determined to unravel the mysteries of the stone box and free herself from the suffocating grip of Becker’s sinister machinations.

As the brothers arrive at the doorstep, their sinister intentions are momentarily foiled by Beto’s sudden appearance, seeking Ambar. But Becker’s brutality prevails, and Beto meets a merciless demise. In the aftermath, Red reveals to Ambar the dark truth about his family’s twisted past: their father had exploited a dubious ritual, forcing their mother to participate in gruesome murders of unsuspecting women, under the false promise that it would cure his own ailing health. The weight of this confession is compounded by the knowledge that Arthur, the brothers’ father, had also taken the life of Mary, one of the victims.

Red’s paternal obsession with the mysterious box has become all-consuming, leading him to believe that he too must undergo the same ritualistic “cure” as his father. Ambar, desperate for mercy, begs Red to spare her life, but he remains resolute in his duty to assist his brother. As a consequence, Becker chains Ambar to an ancient altar in their basement lair, leaving her alone with the ominous stone box.

It is there that a malevolent force awakens, presenting Ambar with a haunting vision of her dying mother’s final moments. Unbeknownst to her, however, this “reality” is merely a ruse concocted by the monstrous entity, which begins to kill her in earnest. Sensing the deceit, Ambar resists, and as she smothers her virtual mother with a pillow, the creature retreats back into its box.

Regaining consciousness upstairs, Ambar recovers a ceremonial weapon from the study and unleashes her pent-up fury upon both brothers. Becker fights valiantly, but Petra intervenes, only to meet a gruesome fate at his hands as he sends her tumbling down the stairs. Ambar then brutally dispatches Becker with the sacred tool.

In a chilling climax, Ambar chains Red to the same altar, whereupon the creature emerges once more to exact its deadly revenge. As Red meets his own demise, his spirit is trapped within the house alongside those of their previous victims. Ambar, her wounds miraculously healed, stumbles out of the dwelling, only to discover that ominous veins have begun pulsating on her forehead, mirroring the same telltale signs that had appeared on Becker’s body before his downfall.
