Off the Black 2006

An aging high school baseball umpire, Ray Cook, finds himself in a precarious situation when he makes a crucial call during a game, declaring a pitch from Dave Tibbel a ball instead of a strike. This decision costs the team their chance at the State Playoffs. In the heat of the moment, the impressionable Dave Tibbel succumbs to peer pressure and, driven by revenge, he partners with two teammates to vandalize Ray Cook’s home by covering it in toilet paper.

However, during their mischief, Ray awakens and catches Dave in the act. Instead of opting for a harsh consequence like arrest, Ray decides to take a different path. He chooses to engage with Dave, a young man he sees as lost, and attempts to instill a sense of responsibility regarding his actions. This unexpected interaction leads to an unusual and compelling bond between the two, as they both grapple with their personal struggles.
