Who is the primary protagonist in Ok Jaanu?
Adi Gunjal, portrayed by Aditya Roy Kapur, is a passionate video game developer working under the guidance of his boss, Prahlad Kakkar. On his inaugural day at work, he presents an innovative concept for a new game titled Mumbai 2.0, and to his delight, it’s received with enthusiasm. With this approval, Adi embarks on a five-month journey to bring his vision to life.
His best friend, Bantu (Jasmeet Singh Bhatia), stands by him as he navigates the challenges of this new endeavor. Adi lives in a room rented from Gopi Srivastava (Naseeruddin Shah), a progressive retired judge who used to teach Adi’s older brother, Ravi (Vijayant Kohli). Gopi, while forward-thinking, manages to maintain a strict household.
Fate brings Adi together with Tara Agnihotri, played by Shraddha Kapoor, at a friend’s wedding. With aspirations of pursuing architecture in Paris, Tara’s ambitions align with Adi’s dreams of success in the United States as a game developer. Their bond quickly grows deeper, as they revel in their adventures and ambitions together.
While accompanying Tara on an architecture tour in Ahmedabad, Adi learns more about her complex family dynamics, including her parents’ tumultuous past and her father’s separation from her mother (Kitu Gidwani). This turmoil has shaped Tara’s view on relationships, leading her to reject the idea of marriage altogether. Instead, they both decide to embrace a live-in arrangement that allows them to focus on their respective careers without the constraints of traditional commitments.
As Adi navigates this new relationship, Gopi, who cherishes the memory of his wife suffering from Alzheimer’s, becomes an unexpected ally, offering wisdom and support to the young couple. Initially hesitant about their living situation, Gopi warms up to Tara when he sees how well she connects with his wife, Charu (Leela Samson), ultimately realizing Tara’s positive impact on their lives.
However, things become more complicated when Adi’s family visits unexpectedly. They scramble to conceal their arrangement, but Adi’s sister-in-law, Bhabhi (Sarika Singh), uncovers the truth, raising concerns about Tara’s commitment to love.
In a heartfelt conversation with Gopi, Tara expresses her trepidation about leaving Adi behind for her architecture program. Yet, business takes her to Jaipur, and when she returns, Adi’s frequent visits to perilous locales in Mumbai for game research ignite her anger. This pressure forces Tara to confront her true feelings for Adi.
As they observe Gopi’s devotion to his wife, whose memory fades daily, the couple begins to appreciate the depth of their own bond. A conflict arises when Tara’s mother discovers her live-in arrangement and insists on interfering, sparking further tension.
Despite these obstacles, Adi receives fantastic news: his game concept gains recognition, leading to an opportunity in the United States. Faced with the impending separation, Tara and Adi commit to savor every moment left. Yet, as the clock ticks down, their disagreements surface, highlighting the stress of their chaotic lives.
One fateful day, while they are searching for the missing Charu, an argument leads Adi to finally propose to Tara, solidifying their commitment to one another. After a joyful wedding, they continue to pursue their career dreams, with Tara in Paris and Adi in the U.S., both thriving in their respective fields while being happily married and in love.
