In the gritty industrial setting of Glasgow, along the banks of the River Clyde, Frank Redmond (played by Peter Mullan) finds himself caught in a storm of turmoil as he confronts an unexpected crisis. After dedicating an astonishing 36 years to the construction of the RFA Mounts Bay, Frank is abruptly laid off, along with his fellow colleagues. This dual blow, coupled with the persistent grief of losing one of his sons years ago, plunges him into a deep depression, distancing him from his once-loving wife, Joan. Joan is now quietly pursuing a fresh career as a bus driver, but the emotional chasm between them has grown wider.
At the same time, Frank’s other son, Rob, wrestles with the heavy burden of responsibility. He has devoted himself to household tasks while his wife, Angela (Jodhi May), works tirelessly at the local Jobcentre. This dynamic leaves Rob feeling an overwhelming guilt for being the “surviving” sibling. As Frank’s despair escalates, he suffers a terrifying panic attack, which serves as a wake-up call for him. This pivotal moment forces Frank to reassess his priorities and seek comfort in an unexpected venture: swimming across the English Channel.
Motivated by a booze cruise along the channel, Frank becomes fixated on the idea of swimming it, driven by a desperate need for clarity and focus. With motivation instilled by his steadfast friend, Chan (Benedict Wong)—a warm-hearted chip shop owner—and the backing of his former colleagues, including Danny, Eddie (Sean McGinley), and Norman (Ron Cook), Frank embarks on an arduous training journey to prepare for this monumental challenge.
Ultimately, his triumphant crossing not only calms the storm raging within but also helps mend the strained family bonds, bringing relief and reconnection to their once-fractured relationships.
