Plot Summary

As the evening wears on, college student Ethan (no stranger to disappointment) makes his escape from the dinner table, abandoning his family’s expectations to instead devote himself to ELI, an innovative contraption designed to harness wireless electricity. Under the cover of darkness, he and his girlfriend Hannah sneak into their university’s lab, but their experiment takes an unexpected turn when a massive power surge leaves the campus in darkness.

The following morning brings devastating news: Ethan’s parents, Richard and Lila, are involved in a tragic accident that claims their lives. The family is left reeling as Ethan returns home to support his younger brother Matt and little sister Becca through this unimaginable loss.

As Ethan works tirelessly on his machine in the garage, he begins to notice strange occurrences throughout the house whenever the device is activated. It starts with small, seemingly insignificant events - a door creaking open, a faint whisper in the wind. But as time passes, these incidents escalate into full-blown apparitions that defy explanation.

Becca, who had previously been quiet about her own experiences, reveals to her brother and Matt that she’s been conversing with an unseen entity named Alice. The trio becomes convinced that their parents are trying to communicate with them from beyond the grave, and they work together to strengthen the connection between the living and the dead.

Hannah, who had been left out of the loop, is eventually brought into Ethan’s confidence. Together, they make adjustments to the device in the hopes of fostering a more robust exchange with the other side. As tensions build, Ethan warns his siblings to keep their experiments under wraps, fearing that the outside world might not understand what’s happening.

Their neighbor Tom, a widower who works for the DWP, lends a helping hand (and some much-needed expertise) as Ethan rewires the house’s electricity to accommodate the device. With Matt and Becca egging him on, Ethan continues to refine his machine, driven by an insatiable desire to make contact with the spirits.

When Matt’s friend Dag drops by, Ethan activates the device in the garage, only to watch as the young man flees in terror after encountering a shadowy presence. The family is shaken but undeterred, and they continue to experiment, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

As tensions escalate, Tom returns, his eyes blazing with a mixture of concern and curiosity. He reveals that he too has been experiencing strange occurrences - encounters with a ghostly figure he believes to be his late wife, Karen. Ethan is forced to confront the possibility that there may be more to this phenomenon than just simple grief.

Meanwhile, Becca opens up about her imaginary friend Alice, revealing that she’s been afraid of someone named Henry. The family is left wondering what secrets their house might be hiding, and whether they’re willing to face the truth.

Hannah pays a visit, bearing footage from their university experiment that seems to capture evidence of paranormal activity. Ethan and his girlfriend head to Marie’s place, seeking answers about Alice and her mysterious connection to Henry Gifford, the foster father suspected of being involved in her disappearance.

As the ghostly presence expertly manipulates the situation, Becca is drawn to the trunk with an irresistible force, lured by the promise of a game of hide-and-seek with her beloved doll. Unbeknownst to her, this innocent diversion serves as a gateway to a hidden passage that leads directly to a foreboding basement chamber, where she becomes ensnared by the malevolent entity.

Meanwhile, Ethan’s growing unease and desperation propel him into action, racing to the house alongside Hannah in an attempt to rescue his sister from the clutches of the supernatural. Upon arriving, Ethan discovers that the device responsible for their predicament has vanished, leaving him with a daunting task: confronting Tom about the missing machine.

As tensions escalate, Matt and Hannah find themselves separated, each struggling to navigate the labyrinthine situation. Matt’s search ultimately leads him into the same hidden chamber where Becca was captured, only to be seized by the same entity that had taken his sister.

Tom, still reeling from his own emotional turmoil, refuses to relinquish control of the device, insisting on continuing to communicate with the ghost he believes to be his wife. His determination sparks a fierce altercation with Ethan, who eventually succeeds in convincing Tom that the apparition is not his beloved and that it’s essential to liberate himself in order to rescue Becca.

As the dark figure closes in on Matt and Becca in their temporary refuge, Ethan takes drastic action, destroying the device at Tom’s house. The entities vanish into thin air, leaving behind only the faintest whisper of malevolence.

In the aftermath of this harrowing experience, Ethan provides comfort to a shaken Tom before reuniting with his sister and Hannah. Together, they bid farewell to their troubled past and embark on a new chapter in their lives, leaving the old house - along with its dark secrets - firmly behind.

Despite Becca’s best efforts to leave her doll’s haunting presence behind, it mysteriously resurfaces in a moving box, serving as a poignant reminder that some memories are impossible to shake.
