What is Shannon Mathers on a pilgrimage to do?
Photojournalist Shannon Mathers ventures into the serene landscapes of Lake Easton Remote Forest Lands, seeking to fulfill a heartfelt mission: to climb the hills and spread her late father’s ashes in a place that held significance during his childhood. Sadly, a sudden thunderstorm prevents her from reaching the peak, leaving her with an unresolved farewell. On her way back, she encounters a police officer, Billie, who is in the midst of a dubious transaction involving a drug peddler named Jimmy. Billie covertly supplies Jimmy with seized drugs, but their arrangement is unravelling as Jimmy’s sales decline and he’s turned informant, recording their exchange for federal authorities.
Faced with the grim reality of Jimmy’s betrayal, Billie shoots him dead, and unbeknownst to her, Shannon captures the entire incident on her camera. In her attempt to escape, Billie spots her and begins a frantic chase into the thick forest. Shannon, determined to slip away, inadvertently drops her camera in the chaos.
Enter Jack Harris, a retired cop grappling with depression following his wife’s battle with cancer, which ended just three weeks prior. Seeking solace at his niece Pam’s forest lodge, he embarks on a hike to clear his mind. Unbeknownst to him, Billie’s police corruption is unraveling as she informs Sheriff Hank Rivers about Shannon witnessing the drug bust. Hank, shrewd and unconcerned, dispatches his brother Tommy to eliminate any trace of their wrongdoing.
The chase intensifies as corrupt officers pursue Shannon, ultimately capturing her. Billie, fearing that Shannon possesses incriminating evidence, decides to eliminate her. Just as they plan to carry out their sinister act near the marsh, Jack hears Shannon’s desperate cries for help. Armed and courageous, he confronts Billie, forcing her to discard her weapon, and together they flee into the wilderness, though they soon become separated.
As the story unfolds, Shannon discovers her inner strength. In a moment of peril, she finds a shed equipped with tools, using those to free herself and confront Billie once again. The tension escalates as Shannon encounters Tommy, leading to a lethal confrontation where she turns the weapon against him.
With unnerving twists, Jack reveals his identity as a retired officer, assuring Shannon that she is not a criminal. He urges her to recover her camera while he contacts Pam for support. Meanwhile, Hank’s manipulative tactics escalate; he plans to capture Jack’s niece Pam as leverage, which drives Jack to desperation.
In a strategic move, Shannon uploads the damning footage of the drug bust onto the FBI’s official website, sending an SOS cry for help. Meanwhile, Jack sets a trap for Hank at a cabin, culminating in a tense standoff. In the climax, gunfire ensues, leading to Hank’s downfall as he finds himself wounded and facing the consequences of his corrupt actions.
With Hank apprehended, Shannon emerges victorious, safe and resolute. She returns to Pam’s cabin, ready to embark on another hike with Jack, determined to reach the top and prove to her late father that she has evolved beyond the weakness he once mocked.
