As the esteemed Professor Howard Birack (Howard Birack) and his students arrive at the ancient monastery Saint Goddard's, they are greeted by a Catholic priest who invites them to unravel the mysteries hidden within the walls. The Brotherhood of Sleep, an enigmatic order that communicates through the realm of dreams, has long been shrouded in secrecy. Their peculiar request is to assist in deciphering the cryptic clues surrounding a mysterious cylinder containing a swirling green liquid that seems to hold the power of the unknown. Among the group of thirteen academics are Walter Fong, a wise-cracking wit; Kelly, an enigmatic presence; Susan Cabot, whose sharp intellect is matched only by her heightened emotional sensitivity; laid-back Mullins; and Brian Marsh and Catherine Danforth, whose romantic entanglement adds a personal dimension to their investigation. As they delve deeper into the mystery, they are soon joined by fellow scientists Calder, Lisa, Etchinson, Lomax, Frank Wyndham, and Dr. Paul Leahy.

Within the labyrinthine monastery, the team discovers an ancient text that reveals the liquid as the physical manifestation of Satan himself. The revelations continue to unfold as they uncover Jesus Christ was not of this world, but rather an extraterrestrial being who was martyred for heresy after attempting to warn humanity about the vessel containing Satan's essence. As the academics analyze the surrounding books with the aid of a computer, they stumble upon differential equations that seem to hold the key to unlocking the secrets within.

Over the course of two days, small jets of the sentient liquid escape from the cylinder, and Susan becomes the first to be infected as it lodges itself down her throat. Her transformation into an unwitting vessel of evil is swift, as she begins a relentless hunt for her companions. The group watches in horror as Wyndham's brutal demise unfolds at the hands of one of the entranced homeless individuals who have begun to gather around the monastery.

As the days pass, members of the team succumb to the liquid's influence, including Mullins, Lisa, Calder, and Dr. Leahy. Anyone attempting to flee the monastery is met with a deadly fate, as the growing horde of enthralled homeless people has encircled the premises. Etchinson is stalked and impaled by the leader of the forsaken mob in a chilling display of the liquid's power. As the last remnants of humanity cling to hope, they are faced with an impossible choice: succumb to the darkness or risk everything to escape the clutches of the evil that threatens to consume them all.

As Professor Birack and the priest delve deeper into the mysteries of the possessed cylinder, they propose a chilling theory: Satan is not a standalone entity, but rather the offspring of an even more malevolent force - the Anti-God, a being bound to the realm of anti-matter. Meanwhile, the survivors are plagued by recurring visions of a shadowy figure emerging from the front of the church, a tachyon transmission sent as a warning from the future. With each iteration, the dream reveals increasingly detailed glimpses into an actual broadcast from the year 1999, foreshadowing the apocalypse.

In a desperate bid to escape the clutches of the possessed, Walter finds himself trapped in a closet, forced to watch in horror as the cylinder is brought to a sleeping Kelly. The liquid within transfuses into her body, transforming her into a grotesque vessel for Satan - a being with powers of telekinesis and regeneration. As Kelly attempts to summon the Anti-God through a dimensional portal using a makeup compact mirror, the mirror proves too small, and her efforts are foiled.

Chaos erupts as the possessed individuals, now under the control of the green goo, launch a vicious attack on their former friends. Lomax is taken down by Mullins, who has succumbed to the dark force's influence. While the others are busy fighting for survival, Kelly finds a larger wall mirror and draws the Anti-God's hand through it, opening a portal to the other realm. Catherine, the only one free from possession, tackles Kelly, sending both women tumbling into the portal. The priest then shatters the mirror with an axe, trapping Kelly, the Anti-God, and Catherine in the alternate dimension. As the possessed individuals suddenly drop dead, the street people disperse, and the survivors (Brian, Walter, Professor Birack, and the priest) are finally rescued.

In a final twist of fate, Brian experiences another recurring dream, only to find himself face-to-face with Catherine, seemingly possessed by Satan's dark energy. This too is revealed to be just another vision, as he awakens screaming and approaches his bedroom mirror, reaching out to touch its surface just before the screen fades to black.
