Plot Summary

In the heart of Palestine, 17-year-old Rana’s life is forever altered when she awakens to the stark reality that her father has chosen to uproot their family and relocate to Egypt in search of a stable income. The letter he leaves behind presents her with a daunting dilemma: accompany him to Egypt, where she can continue her education under his watchful eye, or remain in Palestine and surrender to the arranged marriage that awaits her. Her father’s ultimatum is clear - Rana has only 10 hours to make a choice before he departs for Egypt. The weight of this decision settles heavily upon her shoulders as she navigates the complexities of her own desires and the expectations placed upon her by those who claim to know what is best.

As Rana grapples with the crushing constraints imposed upon her, she finds solace in the thought of Khalil, her forbidden love. Her father’s disapproval and exclusion from the list of approved suitors only serve to further entrench Rana’s resolve. With a sense of urgency driving her actions, she sets out on a journey to find Khalil, ultimately tracking him down to his latest theatrical endeavor.

In a desperate bid to secure their future together, Rana implores Khalil to marry her, pressing him for a decision that will allow them to tie the knot before her father’s departure. They locate a willing sheikh and embark on a drive to her father’s home, seeking his reluctant blessing. Despite initial reservations, Rana’s father is forced to concede, acknowledging the legitimacy of their union under Islamic law.

As the appointed hour draws near, tension builds as the wedding ceremony remains incomplete. A crucial delay ensues when they discover that the sheikh has been stranded at a roadblock, forcing them to embark on an impromptu rescue mission. Amidst the chaos and uncertainty, Rana, Khalil, and her father converge on the sheikh’s location, exchanging vows in the confines of their vehicle as the Jerusalem streets come alive with celebration.

As the credits roll, Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish’s poignant words echo through the cinematic landscape, a poignant reminder of the enduring power of love to transcend even the most formidable obstacles.
