As Sam navigates the complex web of suspects, he employs his creative skills by building intricate scale models and figurines, which serve as visual representations of the crime scene and the individuals involved. These models become a crucial tool in piecing together the events surrounding Dunn’s murder. Sam’s investigation primarily focuses on patients who have participated in the device’s test phase, as well as co-workers at the company manufacturing it for profit.

Sam’s false pretenses lead him to befriend Carolyn, the inventor’s wife, and gain access to her home, where he steals the actual device. Using this technology, Sam views memories already saved by the test subjects, gaining valuable insights into their experiences. He then meets with each of these individuals, seeking information that may shed light on Dunn’s murder.

One particularly significant interaction is with Todd, a test subject who had a final meeting with Dunn before his untimely demise. Sam asks Todd to wear the headpiece and record his memory of this encounter, which provides a crucial piece of evidence in the investigation. Simultaneously, Sam continues to utilize the device to extract his own memories, but as he does so, he begins to experience unsettling hallucinations of his deceased brother.

The use of the device also has devastating side effects on its test subjects. Many report experiencing vivid hallucinations and a blurring of reality, with some even succumbing to suicidal thoughts. One subject’s affair with Dunn is revealed through Todd’s memory, which further complicates the investigation. The truth begins to unravel as Sam learns that Wendy, the last person to have entered Dunn’s office before his murder, has been withholding information from him.

As the story unfolds, Sam’s fixation on uncovering the truth surrounding Dunn’s death drives him deeper into a labyrinth of secrets and deceit, threatening to consume him entirely.

As Sam seeks to unravel the tangled threads of his life, he turns to Carolyn for assistance in piecing together the puzzle (a fortuitous move, as it transpires she was privy to the affair’s existence and its illicit participants). He sets in motion a plan for Carolyn to facilitate a confrontation between Wendy, the wronged wife, and her husband’s mistress. In this tense encounter, Carolyn masterfully persuades Wendy to don the headset, allowing us to partake in her recollections of Dunn’s final moments. A flashback unfolds: we find ourselves witness to Wendy’s memory, which reveals that Dunn had already succumbed to his demise when she entered the office. Undeterred, Wendy pilfered the device and hastened to Dunn’s home office, where she sought to reclaim her own cherished memories – stored on glass discs – only to be interrupted by Carolyn’s timely arrival, allowing her to escape unnoticed via the back door. This sequence of events is eerily reminiscent of Sam’s later actions, when he secretly commandeered the device before Carolyn could claim it. In exchange for her own memory discs, Wendy agreed to share this flashback with Carolyn, who then received the personal memory disc belonging to Dunn – a keepsake Wendy had inadvertently retained in her pocket as she fled his office.

As if drawn by some unseen force, Carolyn finds herself standing on a beach where she and Dunn once shared a joyous family day with their departed daughter. Here, she bears witness to her deceased husband’s final memories: poignant recollections of their lost child, which he had futilely attempted to erase from his mind. The gruesome reality emerges that Dunn met his demise while attempting to delete painful memories from his own brain – the very process proving fatal. Carolyn, with a heavy heart, places Dunn’s memory disc within a glass vessel, poised to send it drifting out to sea like a message in a bottle.

Sam, moved by Carolyn’s sorrow and seeking to ease her pain, offers her his own memory disc, accompanied by an apology. He confesses that when she watches the contents of this disc, she will finally comprehend the true nature of his identity. Sam’s disc contains the full account of the fateful car accident, as witnessed from his perspective – a tale of devastating loss and tragic consequences. In this harrowing flashback, we discover that Dunn, Carolyn, their daughter, and Sam’s brother were all involved in the collision; tragically, their daughter did not survive, prompting Sam to flee the scene.

In an act of compassion and forgiveness, Carolyn accepts Sam’s apology and adds his memory disc to the bottle alongside Dunn’s. With a heavy heart, she casts both into the sea, her actions symbolizing the release from the burdens of the past and the power of redemption.
