Plot Summary

In the gritty streets of Bradford, West Yorkshire, two teenage girls, Rita and Sue, navigate the challenges of adolescence on a rundown council estate. To make ends meet, they take on babysitting jobs for the affluent couple, Bob and Michelle, who reside in a more prosperous part of town. One fateful evening, after completing their duties, Bob surprises the girls by offering to give them a lift home, only to veer off course and propose a peculiar proposition: a series of illicit encounters in his car. With an air of nonchalance, Rita and Sue agree, and they begin to indulge in this newfound freedom.

As the girls’ lives take on a new dimension, Sue lands a part-time job at a local taxi firm, where she meets Aslam, a charming Pakistani boy who shares her passion for driving. Their colleagues make a wager on who can win her affections first, but Sue proves to be a worthy adversary, rebuffing their advances with aplomb. Meanwhile, Bob’s obsession with Rita and Sue reaches new heights as he starts making regular visits to their PE tennis class at school, always lurking just beneath the surface.

When Michelle discovers a packet of condoms in Bob’s trousers while ironing his clothes, she unleashes a stormy tantrum that reveals the couple’s troubled past. It transpires that Michelle has never been fond of intimacy, which only fuels Bob’s frustration. As their argument unfolds, the revelation that Bob had previously cheated on Michelle with their own babysitter adds insult to injury.

As Rita and Sue arrive at the house for another babysitting gig, Bob warns them about Michelle’s growing suspicions, advising them to tread carefully. However, the girls’ convincing performances and innocent demeanor manage to placate Michelle’s concerns, allowing them to continue their clandestine trysts with Bob undetected.

As the night wears on, the tension between Bob and Michelle reaches a boiling point, with the couple’s argument spilling over into a public spectacle in front of Rita and Sue, who can’t help but be captivated by the drama unfolding before their eyes. Michelle’s frustration boils over as she lashes out at her friends, then storms off to bed, leaving Rita and Sue to make their own way home, their plans for a nightcap foiled once again by Bob’s inability to accommodate them. The next morning, Michelle attempts to placate Bob’s wandering eye by offering herself up to him, but the encounter ends in disaster.

The following day, the group heads out on a school trip, where Sue finds herself at the center of a heated confrontation with a classmate who’s been spreading rumors about her supposed dalliance with a married man. Later that evening, Rita and Sue meet Bob for another tryst, only to find themselves left wanting as Bob’s arousal proves elusive. In an effort to salvage the situation, Bob takes the girls out on the town, where they’re spotted by Michelle’s friend Mavis, who’s quick to share the news with her pal.

The next day, Mavis wastes no time in dashing over to deliver the coup de grâce, and Michelle arrives at Rita’s doorstep, dragging her unwitting hostess into Mavis’s car for a confrontation that’s been building all day. As Bob arrives on the scene, the group’s anger and frustration boil over into a full-blown argument that spills out onto the streets, drawing in Sue’s parents and leaving them all feeling raw and exposed.

As the drama reaches its crescendo, Michelle unleashes a barrage of accusations at Rita and Sue, only to be met with a withering retort from Sue herself: it’s Bob’s lack of intimacy that drives him to seek out other women, not any supposed promiscuity on their part. The argument devolves into chaos as everyone takes turns laying blame, with even Sue’s parents getting in on the act. Just when it seems like things can’t get any more heated, Rita’s brothers arrive on the scene, riding in on their motorcycles to spirit their sister away from the fray.

Michelle returns home, her pride wounded and her anger simmering just below the surface. She sets about ransacking the house, then makes her escape with the kids, leaving Bob to pick up the pieces of his shattered life. The next day, Sue shows up at Rita’s doorstep, only to find that her friend has already made plans to move on, pregnant and ready to start a new life with Bob.

When Bob arrives to collect Rita, Sue is left seething with anger and betrayal, feeling like she’s been punched in the gut. With those two weeks until graduation ticking away, Sue knows it’s time to cut ties with her former friend and move on, leaving Bob and Rita to their new life together.

Sue’s attempt to rebound from her past with Bob by dating Aslam quickly takes a dramatic turn as she becomes increasingly entwined with him. Her father’s bigoted outburst upon meeting Aslam at Sue’s home prompts her to leave the family house and take up residence with her new beau and his sister, marking a significant departure from her previous life.

As the weeks pass, Sue’s world is rocked once more by the news of Rita’s miscarriage, which she visits her in hospital to support. However, when Bob makes another unwanted advance, only to be rebuffed by Sue, he remains fixated on her and offers her a ride home. Aslam, oblivious to Bob’s lingering affections, perceives Sue’s interaction with her former lover as a betrayal and confronts her, his anger boiling over.

Meanwhile, tensions between Rita and Bob simmer just below the surface. When Bob inadvertently utters Sue’s name during a romantic encounter with Rita, it sparks a furious reaction from his partner, who is convinced he is still pursuing Sue behind her back. Her suspicions confirmed by Aslam’s violent outburst at Sue, Rita springs to her defense, striking Aslam in the knee and prompting Sue to retaliate by kicking him in the groin. The two women then make a hasty exit, seeking solace with Bob, who tends to Sue’s wounds. However, their brief respite is disrupted by Aslam’s relentless pursuit of Sue, who refuses to be swayed by his pleas.

As the drama unfolds, Rita announces that she will permit Sue to move in with them, much to Bob’s dismay. The two women retreat upstairs, leaving their partner feeling like an unwelcome guest in his own home. However, when Bob finally makes his way upstairs, he is met with an unexpected sight: both women are waiting for him in bed, and he can’t resist the opportunity to join them.
