Robert Benchley, an esteemed Academy Award winner, introduces himself as the narrative guide throughout the film’s chaotic journey, charged with unraveling its complex plot at the behest of “the front office.”
The story swiftly shifts to Sal and Chester Hooton, an elderly married couple, who receive a visit from their long-time companion, Duke Johnson. As they share fond memories of past adventures, including their mishaps in the Klondike, their bond is obvious.
Transported back to the early 20th century, we see Hooton and Johnson as a vaudeville duo, known by the moniker “Prof Zambini and Ghost-O.” Their act, filled with deception and sleight of hand, leaves a trail of disillusioned investors. When authorities catch wind of their dubious dealings, the duo is forced to flee. A disagreement arises regarding their next steps, resulting in Johnson making off with Hooton’s funds and leaving him stranded at the port. Determined not to be thwarted, Hooton sets his sights on New York, while Johnson heads north to Alaska.
Their lives intersect again once Johnson’s ship docks, thrusting him into labor in exchange for his passage. During this arduous period, Chester stumbles upon a treasure map rumored to lead to a legendary gold mine. Unbeknownst to him, the nefarious McGurk and Sperry are on their trail. An intense confrontation follows, but the clever duo cleverly outsmarts their adversaries by adopting their personas and disguising their identities.
Simultaneously, Sal van Hoyden arrives at the Last Chance dance hall, voicing her suspicions about McGurk and Sperry’s unsavory businesses to Ace Larson, the dance hall owner. Instead of alerting the authorities, Larson decides to act on his own, offering Sal a job as an entertainer, much to the chagrin of his girlfriend, Kate, who is left both confounded and irritated by the unfolding events.
As Chester and Duke acclimate to life in Alaska, they find themselves enchanted by Sal’s captivating performances. The charming performer flirts with each man, luring them to her quarters under the pretense of a midnight rendezvous. Despite some doubts regarding their identities, Sal is resolute about recovering the stolen map.
In a bold move, Chester and Duke resolve to split the map, tearing it in two and pledging to protect their respective halves. However, this reckless decision sets off a domino effect of unforeseen consequences.
As the duo traverses the harsh Alaskan wilderness, they adopt an unlikely mode of transportation: a dog sled, aided by a jovial canine companion. Initially, they take turns maneuvering the sled, with their furry friend joining in as an unexpected passenger. Their expedition takes an unusual detour upon encountering Santa Claus, who is navigating the snowy terrain in his own sled, going the opposite way. The foursome soon comes across Sal, who has reunited with Kate at a nearby cabin. As the group converges, Sal becomes fixated on Duke and Chester and attempts to extract information about the elusive map.
Torn between her newfound affections for Duke and her commitment to the plan, Sal hesitates. However, Kate’s insightful warning—that only Ace can guarantee their survival and that the secret lies in surrendering the map—ultimately persuades Sal to take action. Under the cloak of night, she stealthily pilfers the map from the unsuspecting men while they sleep. When dawn breaks, she and Kate slip away with their ally, Lebec, leaving Duke and Chester in the thick of a newfound quandary.
The self-deceived duo soon faces the genuine McGurk and Sperry, realizing in a moment of dawning horror that the girls have made off with the treasure map. Forced to regroup, they stage a thrilling escape through treacherous mountains, eventually returning to town. Wearing their McGurk and Sperry disguises once again, they learn that their charades could lead to dire consequences. Undeterred, they devise a plan to scare off the pursuing mob by using a strategically placed stick of dynamite, rescuing Sal, who has been held captive in a back room.
As the real McGurk and Sperry arrive on the scene, Duke and Chester ingeniously leave a lit dynamite stick in a nearby candlestick. This leads to an explosive climax, leaving their adversaries in utter disarray. With another dog sled at their disposal, the trio makes a daring escape, but their adventure quickly takes a perilous turn when the ice beneath them gives way, leaving Duke and Chester perilously perched, each straddling an ever-widening chasm.
Ultimately, it’s Sal and Chester who find themselves on opposite sides of the gap, with Duke standing resolutely on the side of the vengeful mob. In a heart-wrenching moment, he tosses the precious map into the abyss, bidding farewell to his friends before turning to confront his pursuers.
The film concludes with an aged Duke spinning tales of his harrowing escape to Sal and Chester. What follows is a revelation that sends shockwaves through the audience—Chester and Sal have built a family, raising a young son who bears a striking resemblance to none other than Duke himself. With a touch of irony, the camera focuses on Chester’s face as he proudly states, “We adopted him.”
