In what year does the events of the original slumber party take place?
In 1993, Trish Devereaux is hosting a slumber party in a cabin in Holly Springs, California, along with her friends Jackie, Kim, and Diane. The night takes a creepy turn when Chad, Trish’s ex-boyfriend, shows up and spies on them through the window, becoming aroused by their dancing. His excitement is abruptly interrupted by a sinister figure lurking nearby—Russ Thorn, a notorious killer armed with a power drill. In a horrifying act, Russ brutally murders Chad, then breaks into the cabin, where Kim and Diane meet their grim fates. Desperate to protect her friends, Trish tries to prevent Jackie from opening the front door, but Russ kills Jackie by drilling her throat. Despite suffering a severe injury to her hand, Trish manages to escape Russ’s grasp by striking him with an oar, sending him into the lake. Although everyone believes Russ has drowned, his body is never recovered.
Fast forward to present-day Los Angeles, where Trish’s daughter, Dana, is excitedly embarking on a weekend getaway with her friends Maeve, Breanie, and Ashley. Their trip gets off to a rocky start when they discover that Maeve’s younger sister, Alix, has secretly joined them. As they travel to their rented house, their car breaks down in what is now known as Jolly Springs. Spotting an advertisement for a cabin for rent that night, the girls manage to convince Kay, the general store owner and cabin proprietor, to let them stay, though she warns them to be quiet and still.
As the night progresses with the girls dancing, Alix, feeling bored, wanders outside and stumbles upon some unsettling sights, including the body of a mechanic with eyes drilled out. After returning to the cabin, bloodied and shaken, she alerts the others. The girls excitedly shout “pillow fight” but reveal they are armed with knives and baseball bats, of which they explain their intentions to lure out and confront Russ Thorn, who they believe is still alive after claiming 20 victims since Trish’s last encounter.
Their plans take a twist when they encounter two guys from a neighboring cabin, John and Matt. John, an avid fan of a crime podcast, gleefully mentions that they’ve rented the actual cabin where Trish’s friends were murdered. Alarmed by the girls’ weapons, Matt and John leave in a hurry, but the girls decide to follow them, fearing that Russ could target the boys next. The horror escalates quickly, as when Guy 1 ventures outside, he encounters Russ, who gruesomely kills him with his drill.
The atmosphere grows tense as the girls and the remaining guys band together, realizing they must confront Russ Thorn. A chase ensues, leading to more gruesome attacks, and soon, Sean, one of the males, gets brutally drilled in the face. When Dana faces Russ, a climactic showdown unfolds, resulting in Alix stabbing Russ multiple times, seemingly putting an end to his reign of terror.
However, the morning brings new complications. As the girls attempt to return to normalcy, they discover that Russ’s body has mysteriously vanished along with the escalating danger; they soon encounter a new assailant. Kay, the cabin owner, is revealed to be Russ’s vengeful mother, seeking to avenge her son’s presumed death. A fierce battle ensues between her and Trish, culminating in a showdown where Trish uses a broken drill bit to strike down Kay.
As Kay breathes her last, the girls find solace in the fact that the terror they faced is finally at an end, and they embrace one another, relieved to have survived the night of horror.
