What is the primary setting where Crystal and Leo hope to start anew?
As they attempt to escape the repercussions of Crystal’s life-altering choice, she and Leo find themselves embarking on a desperate journey toward freedom and redemption. Arriving in the picturesque St. Petersburg, Florida, they cling to the hope of leaving their troubled pasts behind and starting afresh. However, Crystal’s frayed mental state and the burden of her lingering guilt become overwhelming, pushing her to seek comfort from Leo at his ex-girlfriend’s home.
During what should have been a moment of rekindling old ties, Leo’s efforts are brutally derailed when Crystal reacts violently to the shocking sight of him sharing a kiss with another woman. Their already tumultuous relationship hits a critical breaking point, compelling them to leave in haste. To calm her turbulent emotions, Leo brings Crystal to the enchanting Weeki Wachee Springs, where she becomes mesmerized by the awe-inspiring mermaid show.
Meanwhile, Leo’s attempts at finding solace in the city take a dark turn when he is asked to vacate a boat rental due to the incriminating evidence in his trunk— the body of Crystal’s deceased husband. Undeterred, he promptly returns to Weeki Wachee Springs to collect Crystal, leading them both into the ominous depths of the water.
In a shocking turn of events, Leo’s plan to dispose of both the body and the boatman he has also slain culminates in disaster. Crystal, incensed and feeling betrayed, lashes out at him with an oar, convinced that she can finally purge herself of her guilt-stricken conscience. Yet, a moment of clarity strikes her as she glimpses the shore, only to be met by the local authorities, which sends her scrambling into the perilous swamp.
As Crystal vanishes into the wilderness, Leo comes to and makes the significant choice to surrender to the police, reflecting the moral complexities of his character. In a moment of quiet contemplation, Crystal finds herself gravitating toward a nearby pool, her movements revealing the turmoil within her mind. When approached by the property owner who questions whether she intends to seek help from the authorities, she cryptically replies, > “Not yet.”
