Late at night, amidst the darkness of a desolate road, the famous actor Armaan Kapoor (Vivan Bhatena](/actor/vivan-bhatena)) finds himself in a dire situation. In a moment of panic, he seemingly loses control of his vehicle, crashing into the sea. This sets off a chain of events that brings Senior Police Inspector Surjan Singh Shekhawat (Aamir Khan) and his diligent assistant Devrath Kulkarni (Rajkummar Rao) into the thick of the investigation. When Armaan’s body is recovered, it is confirmed by his perplexed wife Sonia (Pariva Pranati), who is baffled that her husband, a major film star, was driving alone in the early hours. Typically, he would have his driver, Ramu, and his spot boy, Yuvraj, by his side.

The timeline reveals that Armaan left the film city post-shooting at 2:20 am, and his tragic accident occurred at 4 am. The baffling element is that this particular stretch of road has been the site of numerous strange incidents over the past three years. Meanwhile, Surjan is grappling with his own grief; his young son, Karan, has recently drowned, leaving his wife Roshni (Rani Mukerji) in a state of sorrow and Surjan buried under guilt.

As the investigation deepens, Surjan uncovers that on the night of the crash, Armaan was transporting a staggering sum of Rs 2 million in cash, which has mysteriously vanished. Inquiry led by Armaan’s accountant reveals that this was not the first time Armaan made such significant cash withdrawals; a previous large transaction was made three years back. The trail eventually leads to a blackmailer named Shashi (Subrat Dutta), who had previously assisted Armaan in covering up an incident involving him and a friend. Following Armaan’s demise, Shashi vanishes with the money, and his associate Taimur (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) seizes the chance to start blackmailing Armaan’s friend Sanjay (Suhaas Ahuja), further entrenching the web of deceit.

Roshni seeks comfort through a local medium, Frenny Mistry (Shernaz Patel), who claims a connection with Karan’s spirit. As Roshni continues to dabble in these sessions alone, a transformative twist occurs when Surjan encounters an escort named Rosie (Kareena Kapoor). Reluctantly, he proposes that she act as an informant; her encounters and insights prove invaluable to the case.

The plot thickens when Shashi’s body is discovered alongside the stolen cash and a provocative DVD that reveals Armaan’s inappropriate behavior with women. Rosie confesses her past encounter with Armaan and his friends, adding an eerie layer to the mysterious incident. Surjan, consumed by his emotions, confronts Roshni over her ongoing séances, leading to a strain in their relationship.

As the story unfolds, mounting suspicions lead to further violence. Sanjay orchestrates the murder of Taimur, who exposes the dark secrets behind Armaan’s past. Ultimately, as Surjan grapples with his struggles, the full picture reveals itself: a tragic accident from three years ago that forever altered lives. The incident involved an escort and left lasting scars, as both Armaan and Sanjay once made heart-wrenching decisions to wash their hands of responsibility.

In a poignant culmination, Surjan and Sanjay confront the very road where it all began, leading to a near-replica of the fateful night. However, it is Rosie who rescues Surjan from the abyss. In a twist of fate, Surjan’s superior suggests glossing over the case, and he reluctantly admits Armaan’s death as an accident.

As the story closes, Surjan finds peace, holding onto a letter from Karan, which conveys his desire for his parents to find happiness, allowing Surjan to reconcile with Roshni. The narrative ends on a haunting note with a post-credits scene where workers erect a caution sign at the same dark spot—remembrance lingers, even as new beginnings beckon.
