Leigh Ann, played by Katie Holmes, is a determined high school student with aspirations of becoming valedictorian. However, her dreams are jeopardized by her cruel and vindictive History teacher, Mrs. Tingle, portrayed by Helen Mirren. Mrs. Tingle harbors a particular animosity toward Leigh Ann, going so far as to penalize her for a well-executed project. The situation escalates when Mrs. Tingle discovers stolen final exam answers hidden in Leigh Ann’s backpack and threatens to expel her.

That evening, Leigh Ann, along with her friends, Luke and Jo Lynn (played by Marisa Coughlan), decides to confront Mrs. Tingle at her home in an attempt to clear Leigh Ann’s name. Unfortunately, their discussion spirals into chaos, leading to an unintentional knock on Mrs. Tingle’s head that renders her unconscious. In a panic, the trio binds her to her bed. To buy some time, Jo Lynn impersonates Mrs. Tingle over the phone, claiming illness. However, apprehension looms as they debate their next steps.

As tensions rise, Mrs. Tingle admits her hatred for Leigh Ann stems from jealousy; she feels threatened by Leigh Ann’s potential to escape their restrictive small-town life—something she couldn’t achieve herself. This revelation only stirs more animosity among her captors. Out of frustration and a sudden impulse, an angry Leigh Ann kisses Luke, leading to an impulsive moment of intimacy on Mrs. Tingle’s couch.

The next day, a rift forms between Leigh Ann and Jo Lynn, exacerbated by Leigh Ann’s careless admission of her encounter with Luke. In a desperate attempt to regain control, they scheme to blackmail Mrs. Tingle with incriminating photographs of her affair with the gym teacher. Just as they prepare to follow through with their plan, Mrs. Tingle breaks free, leading to a chaotic confrontation at the top of the stairs.

During the struggle, Mrs. Tingle appears to fall to her demise but quickly recovers, grabbing a crossbow and firing at Leigh Ann. In an unfortunate twist, the bolt strikes Trudie Tucker (Liz Stauber) as she enters the scene, setting the stage for a dramatic reveal when Principal Potter (Michael McKean) arrives. Ultimately, Leigh Ann forces Mrs. Tingle to confess her motives for wanting her to fail. The truth comes out about her shooting Trudie, but in a fortunate turn, Trudie survives, having been shielded by a textbook. In the end, justice prevails as Mrs. Tingle is dismissed from her position, while Leigh Ann claims her rightful title as valedictorian.
