In a bright and cheerful day on Sesame Street, Elmo’s peace is shattered when his cherished blanket gets stained with orange juice. In a hurry to fix the mishap, he races to the laundromat, where an unexpected meeting with Zoe ignites a fierce contest over the beloved blanket. The friendly tussle leads to its unfortunate tearing, causing Elmo to feel deeply hurt and sever his friendship with Zoe, claiming she’s no longer his friend.
Meanwhile, Telly Monster, in a whirlwind of roller-skating chaos, accidentally whisks away the precious blanket, sending it off on an unplanned adventure throughout the streets. Eventually, the blanket ends up in the possession of Oscar the Grouch, who inadvertently tosses it into his trash can. Unable to bear the separation from his blanket, Elmo dives into the garbage, only to find it snagged on a door.
Just when things seem bleak, Elmo and his blanket are swept away through a magical tunnel, landing in the dismal world of Grouchland. Here, Elmo learns that the crafty thief Huxley has set his eyes on his beloved blanket. With help from Grizzy, a compassionate Grouch girl who tells him that Huxley’s castle sits atop Mount Pickanose, Elmo feels inspired to undertake the difficult mission of retrieving his blanket. Following the encouragement of Stuckweed, a wise and resilient plant, Elmo begins his challenging journey.
At the same time, Oscar’s call to action motivates the Sesame Street crew—Zoe, Telly, Gordon, Maria, Cookie Monster, and Big Bird—to dive into Grouchland to rescue Elmo. However, their inadvertent plea for help from a Grouch police officer lands them in jail, where they learn that in Grouchland, asking for assistance is against the law. Once united behind bars, the group faces the dire situation together, seeking a way out.
In a twist of fate, Huxley’s nimble sidekick Bug, alongside his mischievous Pesties, captures Elmo in a cave, believing they have him cornered. Utilizing the luminous twinkles of fireflies, Elmo showcases his cleverness and manages to escape. Unyielding, Huxley sets up an ambush at the Queen of Trash’s refuse dump, mistaking Elmo for a spy and dragging him to trial. To win his freedom, Elmo must blow 100 raspberries in just 30 seconds; with the audience’s support, he accomplishes this feat, impressing the Queen who allows him to leave.
But Huxley, not one to relent, sends a colossal chicken after Elmo, sending him soaring away in defeat. Distraught and ready to give up, Elmo is unaware that Grizzy has secretly reached out to his friends about his plight. Oscar, ever the strategist, convinces the Grouches of the value of teamwork to thwart Huxley’s mischievous schemes. This leads to the Sesame Street residents being set free, joining forces with their newly minted Grouch allies to stand against Huxley.
As dawn breaks, a gentle caterpillar inspires Elmo to find the strength to confront his battle. Determined, he marches towards Huxley’s castle and succeeds in reclaiming his blanket, outsmarting the Pesties by using wit and resolve. However, just as victory seems within grasp, Huxley unveils his treacherous mechanism involving a claw and a conveyor stamp. Just in the nick of time, both the citizens of Sesame Street and Grouchland come together to rescue Elmo and thwart Huxley’s escape plan, but not before the blanket is accidentally sucked into the vacuum of Huxley’s helicopter.
In the ensuing tumult, Bug, who had secretly empathized with Elmo, takes command of the helicopter and returns the treasured blanket to its rightful owner. Reunited with his friends back on Sesame Street, Elmo humbly apologizes to Zoe, inviting her to once again hold the blanket. With fresh appreciation for each other, they forge a stronger bond of friendship. As Elmo bids farewell to the viewers, he graciously acknowledges their steadfast support throughout his adventurous journey.
In this engaging tale, Bert and Ernie pop up intermittently to serve as clever narrators, adeptly guiding the audience through the film’s captivating storyline.
