Following the heartbreaking loss of his wife, Lisa, due to a tragic electrical accident, psychologist Dr. Cal Jamison (Ryan Gosling) decides to move from the familiar surroundings of Minneapolis to the bustling metropolis of New York City. Accompanied by his young son Chris, he seeks to start anew as a police psychologist for the NYPD. However, his arrival coincides with a series of brutal and ritualistic child murders that leave law enforcement at a loss. The discovery of the first victim in an abandoned movie theater prompts a distressing 911 call from Officer Tom Lopez, who believes that these gruesome acts are tied to a Hispanic cult engaged in dark, ritualistic practices known as brujería.

As Cal immerses himself in the investigation, he finds himself tasked with assessing Tom, who spirals deeper into paranoia while frantically detailing the cult’s elusive leader. The second murder sends shockwaves through the city when a child is discovered horrifically eviscerated on a makeshift altar beneath a Staten Island dock. This discovery leads Cal to explore the world of brujería further with his compassionate housekeeper and nanny, Carmen. Her protective charms scatter throughout their home serve as her unwavering commitment to their safety. Meanwhile, Tom’s downward spiral culminates in tragedy when he takes his own life in a diner, forcing Cal to grapple with the tangled complexities of this harrowing investigation.

As he digs deeper into the mystery, Cal develops a budding relationship with Jessica, his new girlfriend. Their bond faces a test when they attend a party and cross paths with Palo, a mysterious Caribbean man who harbors a disturbing obsession with Jessica’s jewelry. Unknown to her, Palo is subtly interfering with a compact left behind, prompting an ominous feeling in Cal when he returns home to find Carmen engaged in a ritual involving Chris. In the midst of chaos, he reveals a dark secret regarding Robert Calder, a ritual murder described in a now-closed investigation that rocked the foundations of their community. Unbeknownst to Cal, McTaggert succumbs to despair and ends his life shortly after sharing this harrowing information.

Back in the hospital, Jessica’s panic attacks escalate when her wound bursts, releasing another swarm of spiders. In the midst of this chaos, Kate leaves a cryptic voice message, altering her plans and arranging for Chris to return to Cal – a message tragically interrupted. Ignorantly unaware of the underlying threats, Cal and his friend Marty drive toward the estate, where they are met with chilling tales of human sacrifice meant to avert drought.

As Cal arrives, he finds himself confronted by Palo, Calder, and their group of cultists, who implore him to join their sinister affinity, proclaiming Chris as the destined sacrifice. Undeterred, Cal fights back, eliminating Dennis and thwarting the planned sacrifice. At a crucial moment, Marty shows up to assist, shooting cultists from above. As they make their way out, Cal retrieves Chris, but the situation pivots as Marty falls victim to Palo’s treacherous dart, resulting in severe injury. In a climactic encounter, Cal confronts Calder, delivering a fatal strike before making their escape, leaving behind a severely injured Palo, who meets his demise by Chris’s hand.

The stirring narrative concludes with Cal, Jessica, and Chris residing in serene bliss on a charming farm. However, tranquility is short-lived as Jessica’s pregnancy is underscored by unsettling revelations. While exploring the barn, Cal stumbles upon a disturbing altar decorated with sacred symbols and remnants of animal sacrifices.
