Plot Summary

As Finbar “Barry” McMullen stands beside his father’s grave, his mother reveals her plans to leave for Ireland to rekindle a romance with Finbar O’Shaughnessy, the man she truly loves. This news comes as a shock to Barry, who was named after his father and has grown up under the patriarch’s influence. His mother’s decision to abandon her life in Australia for love sparks a mixture of emotions within Barry, as he grapples with the reality that his family is about to undergo significant changes.

Meanwhile, Barry’s brother Jack is torn between his devotion to his wife Molly and his lingering feelings for Ann, a former flame who has re-entered his life. This internal conflict mirrors the turmoil brewing within their family dynamics, where relationships are tested and loyalties are put to the ultimate test.

As Barry and his younger brother Patrick face uncertain futures, they turn to Jack for temporary shelter in their childhood home. However, Patrick’s own struggles with love come to a head when he decides to end things with Susan, only to have her reconsider and recommit to him. This rollercoaster of emotions culminates in Patrick making the bold decision to leave Susan behind for Leslie, an auto mechanic who has captured his heart.

Barry’s journey towards self-discovery takes a surprising turn when he encounters Audrey, the woman whom he initially accuses of “stealing” an apartment from him. Despite an initial rocky start, they slowly grow on each other and begin to forge a connection.

As Jack’s infidelity is finally exposed by Molly’s discovery of a condom in his pocket, their marriage teeters on the brink of collapse. However, it takes a candid confrontation for Jack to acknowledge his wrongdoings and make amends, ultimately vowing to become a better husband than his father was.

In the midst of these personal awakenings, Barry finds himself drawn to Audrey, and the three brothers reunite at their family’s ancestral homestead, now more resolute in their pursuit of love and determined to break free from the shackles of their troubled past.
