What is Julie Styron's initial concern when her CEO requests to dine with her?

Plot Summary

As Julie Styron (Channing) soars through the skies, bound for a crucial meeting, her CEO’s sudden request to dine together has her stomach in knots. The specter of job insecurity looms large, prompting her to solicit the expertise of headhunter Nick Harris (Fred Weller) to fortify her professional defenses. But before she can even consider making any contingency plans, her day takes a nosedive with the tardy arrival of her new assistant Paula Murphy (Stiles), whose 45-minute delay proves to be the catalyst for a disastrous meeting that culminates in Julie’s decision to terminate Paula’s services.

The evening brings an unexpected twist: Julie is promoted to CEO, leaving her feeling both elated and bewildered. As she waits out a flight delay with Paula at a hotel bar, they strike up a conversation that gradually reveals the depth of their mutual frustration. For Julie, who has sacrificed personal fulfillment for professional success, this chance encounter becomes an opportunity to reexamine her life choices.

Their impromptu reunion is soon joined by Nick, whose own flight woes have led him to the same hotel bar. As they commiserate about their shared travel misfortunes, Paula’s demeanor takes on a peculiar quality that piques Julie’s curiosity. Later, as they’re chatting in the bathroom, Julie discovers that Paula has been harboring a dark secret: her friend was brutally assaulted by Nick in Boston, an act of violence that has left an indelible mark on Paula’s psyche.

Julie’s initial outrage eventually gives way to a calculating desire for revenge. But Paula’s more measured approach prevails, and the two women concoct a plan to humiliate Nick without resorting to physical harm. They drug him, then strip him naked in a deserted renovation area of the hotel, effectively rendering him powerless.

As they prepare to leave Nick lying helpless on the floor, Paula produces a Polaroid camera, capturing evidence of their dastardly deed. With Nick’s briefcase safely stowed away, Julie returns to find Paula busily defacing her victim’s torso with markers and snide epitaphs like “rapist” and “pig.” They narrowly avoid detection by a wandering security guard but eventually confess to each other the true nature of their scheme: Paula was the actual victim of Nick’s heinous crime.

As they settle into Julie’s hotel room, exhausted from their ordeal, these two women, once strangers, now share a bond forged in the fires of shared suffering. As they drift off to sleep, the weight of their secrets and the consequences of their actions hang precariously in the balance, threatening to upend their lives forevermore.

As Julie’s morning dawns, she’s met with a jarring discovery: the crude scrawl of “loser” emblazoned on her own stomach, a stark message that seems to sear itself into her psyche. Meanwhile, on the bed beside her, a trio of Polaroid snapshots lies in wait, each one featuring Paula (her supposed friend) in various stages of repose, as if caught in the act of sleep. The juxtaposition is unsettling, like finding a ticking time bomb nestled among the soft, white linens.

The following day, at the airport, Julie’s encounter with Nick takes an unexpected turn. As they reunite, he reveals a shocking truth: his supposed trip to Boston was nothing more than a fabrication, a clever ruse designed to further unravel the tangled web of deception that had been spun around them. The revelation strikes like a lightning bolt, casting a pall of doubt over everything Julie thought she knew about her acquaintance Paula and the events that had transpired.
